Need one for ripping, not burning.

Plenty of highly rated usb2 ones on Amazon for <$100. Would usb3 help at all? Or is the format too slow to matter?

I assume there is no thunderbolt one out there.

In theory you may see a small benefit with Blu-Ray 10x or higher via USB 3.0, in practice I'm skeptical it makes much difference.

We have a couple of these kicking around. It's a burner with USB 3.0, so maybe you can find something cheaper and/or smaller if you don't need those features, but this model is $88 and I can vouch for it working well with OS X, so I thought I'd mention it.

Unless they use a really bad controller, USB2 should not be a limiting factor with that drive - especially when it seems to be based around a slot-loading notebook drive. (much slower than the large desktop drives)

6x Blu-ray is only 27MB/s - and you won't actually be reaching those speeds.
My SATA 12x BDXL drive only reads about 30-40MB/s at peak speeds.

I am wondering if the old USB DVD Apple drive that I got for my MacBook Air will work on the nMP? I see that the new SuperDrive is compatible with the nMP, but what about the older version? Anyone?
