My Father in Law just tried to exchange his Ipod Classic and was told that he'd have to take a Touch because "the classics are being discontinued". While I'm not sure if this is true. I called the local Apple store to confirm, but was given the skate around the answer treatment. I sure hope it's not true.

I can confirm this

A friend of mine went to purchase a classic last week and had to settle for a Touch since they were out of stock. I can confirm this as well.

Apple is releasing a 250 GB LightPeak/Thunderbolt enabled iPod Classic next Tuesday.

I can confirm it; my brother's cousin's uncle's lady friend's BFF told me so.

Keep in mind that Best Buy employees are not actually privy to any information from Apple- in fact, Apple retail employees are usually kept in the dark. The guy who said they were being discontinued is likely to be speculating, the guy skirting around the answer is probably being more honest.

I work for Best Buy and I work in the Mp3 section and I have not herd any thing about not carrying the classic, and according to our inventory it says it is still an active product, that being said we are trained not to say anything in regards to speculation. That being said if a new Ipod is coming out not only would we know you would know as well. So until the apple website says anything the classic is here to stay.

Apple.com tells all!

If anything were to happen to the classic, the first sign would be apple.com's ship date dropping past 24 hours.

Most likely stores aren't carrying many because they are more of a specialty Item these days. When was the last time you saw ANYONE walking around using a classic?

I wouldn't be suprised if apple delegated them to an online only option in the future.....

I do. The classic (rather than my Touch) more or less lives in my rucksack and/or briefcase whenever I'm travelling and is used daily by me in the office when I'm working abroad.

Cheers

I also use my ipod classic regularly and I own both a touch and a droid X but my entire library is on my classic unlike the other two... I bought the classic when they first came out and its still behaving like new i use it mainly in the car but i do use it daily
