Caissa is the strongest of the four.

Chess is the weakest, but it looks the nicest (in terms of simplicity...it uses the natural colors and icons..).

Chess Classics is 3D.

Versus allows internet playing.

But since Caissa's next update includes multiplayer, I chose that...I think 3D chess on the iPhone uses its capabilities, but if you want a program to play chess, it's a lot easier playing on a 2D board (which Classics has, but Caissa is still stronger). I was stuck between Caissa and Versus, but I remember Versus from jailbreak and noted that I didn't see many online players...actually, the only players I was able to play with Versus Chess on the jailbreak was the default computer players which wasn't a challenge at all.

So Caissa is the best once their next update hits with multiplayer.

Hooray. Caissa 2.1 hits RC today.
Once we will receive German, French, and Japanese localized strings, it will get submitted for apple's review the same moment.

I must clarify Niiro13's post. With Caissa 2.1 you can play with others by email. Although it is not really real time online gameplay, it feels real slick. The team was playing for 3 weeks now, kinda addictive :) We don't want to step on the same landmine as Ian from Versus Chess team. Let's face it, even with 3G iPhone IP connection sucks Steve's boots. For me Versus works on acceptable level only using WIFI, using it over cellular connection is torturous. Even though Versus team put significant efforts to employ sophisticated reconnection algorithms, heartbeats, and etc... iPhone platform is simply not ready for real online gaming at this point. I hope push messaging with 2.1 firmware will change that. It will not address realtime issues, but reliable message delivery is good start whichever way you look at. We'll find out about that tomorrow.

Cheers,

Can someone clarify this a little further?

So Versus will allow you to play in realtime with other opponents. Do they have to be on a iPhone/iPod Touch as well? Can they be playing on a website?

Caissa chess allows you to play by email. I dont see this in the descritption of the game. Again, does the other user/person need to be on the same kind of device/platform? Can I play my friend (not in realtime, via email) who is using his computer?

Thanks for any light that can be shed on this....

The version of Caissa Chess ioffe is referring to isn't out yet. He is describing new features in v2.1 which will be submitted to Apple sometime soon.

ioffe, thanks for the clarification. It just stated multiplayer in the description so I assumed realtime.

Well, if it's slick, then I can't wait for it to come out! :)

As to the OP, Versus is realtime, but I never got it to work on anything other than Wi-Fi (work as in playable...very slow). And yes, they do need to have the iPod Touch/iPhone program. Which is why when it was out in jailbreak, you really only could play the computer bots cause no one had it.

Versus clients can play only against Versus clients.
Caissa clients can play only against Caissa clients, however we use extended PGN to keep the moves history so you can export it to any decent chess client on your Mac or PC.

Caissa 2.1 is pending review.

i'm excited about 2.1 -- I can't wait.

ioffe, could you go into a little more detail about how the multiplayer will work over email? How fast will it be, will it be near real time?

good grief. just when I thought the wait for iPhone FW 2.1 was over...now we're waiting for Caissa 2.1, and for almost as long.

I just want 2.1 so I can play it again. I refuse to at the moment, because I can't stand the movement control.

Ditto. I bought the game a month ago and have yet to play game one because of the controls.

Versus Chess

Just thought I would drop in my two cents as the dev lead for Versus Chess.

Versus Chess is multiplayer. That is our primary goal. All games are online and all games are realtime. We focused on simplicity, both in finding an opponent and playing the game.

We haven't noticed or gotten many complaints about lag times over EDGE/3G, aside from this thread. Although Niiro13, if you haven't had a chance to try it since the tech demo, I hope you give it another look.

On the other hand, Caissa is definitely the best choice if you want single player. Boris' app has a ton of options and great AI.

I dont' see any mention of playing by email in the description for Caissa, though I do see a "mail" icon on the screenshot.

So, is the following possible:

-Two people have iPhones with Caissa 2.1 loaded on both.
-Person A makes a move in Caissa.
-Person B opens up thier Caissa app a few hours later, see person A's move. Person B makes his/her own move.
-Person A opens up Caissa the next day, sees the move by person B, and makes a move...

and so on. Is this possible with Caissa? Sorry if this seems like a mundane question, but this is exactly what I'm looking for. If so, I'm more than happy to spend $9.99 x2 on this app. If not, is there anything that will do what I'm looking for?

it does all of the above ;)
plus little more ... you can see history of the previous moves sent by email or involve 3rd person or even cc to spectators, your personal chess guru, whoever...

In theory you can post your games or puzzles (web, email, etc). it is not straight forward yet, but 2.1 wasn't last update neither
Puzzle/Composition delivery framework was build with the same principle.

In anticipation of push messaging, we've build some infrastructure on the server side.
Pity that :apple: ditched that functionality at the eleventh hour.

Caissa Chess 2.1 is now available. Hit update in apps or grab it here.

A MILLION times better playing without Drag and Drop. Thank you for adding this option.

I agree it's better, but the animation is really slow. Would love to turn it off.

I personally hate tap-tap mode, but there is gotta be a choice. Democracy at work :)
I could easily disable animations, but that would mean another option switch in preferences. I don't want to add low level tuning to the UI experience, it will make preferences more convoluted.

I seem to recall either Caissa or the other chess program back in the day on Installer had an option to turn animations off. I could be wrong. All I know is, whichever app I used to play from Installer was a lot more responsive and thereby quicker to pickup and put down.

You know what, this speaks volumes though. I think it's very cool even though you don't like this, that you listen to your customers, and add a setting like that. I for one really appreciate the tap tap feature, so thank you for a great product! I look forward to future updates!

So, ioffe, when I updated to 2.1 I got a wonderful email in my inbox with a little puzzle. I loved it. I expected to get more. Perhaps daily, or even monthly. But, so far, nothing. Is there plans to send more? More often?

I checked caissa.us and it said there was a Database. Where is that? Can we download more puzzles like the one you emailed? Or what are your plans exactly?

Any other poor chess players find it impossible to beat Caissa even on the easiest setting?

Sorry. We had to concentrate on 2.1.1 release. It was submitted for apple certification yesterday. Hopefully it will put the storm down  Now we have some capacity to work on the server side features (puzzles, stats, etc)

cesupro,
mail me your request to support@caissa.us

I'm wondering how I can find other Caissa iPhone players that are up for games. I'm wondering if a feature couldn't be added to hook up iPhone users to other opponents.
