Hi guys

I’m looking for cloud storage that will not compress my photos when uploading them, then redownloading them in the future. Basically, I don’t want to lose any quality.

ive been using onedrive but tbh it’s quite buggy and unreliable when using with iOS, Mac.

the obvious choice is iCloud but I had read previously I will lose original quality with iCloud, plus the amount of space it puts on all your devices with not much choice.

Finally, I would like to start maintaining privacy more, so ideally an option which protects all my privacy and permissions (unlike Google Drive)

If anyone has recommendations for the best cloud storage it would be much appreciated

thanks guys

Where did you read that iCloud reduces quality? iCloud stores your pictures in original quality. If you create a shared album, those pictures will be at a reduced resolution.

Cool, thanks!

so that means as long as I keep them private in the cloud they will retain original quality, is this also true if I redownload them from the cloud on other devices etc?

Yep. Just be aware iCloud Photos is a syncing service. So if you have it turned on on your iPhone and iPad, for example, if you delete a picture from one device, it will delete it from the other.

Also, I should mention you have the option on your devices to keep your full library on your device, or optimize storage. If you pick optimize storage, some pictures will just be a thumbnail preview on your device if your device is running low on storage. The full, original quality picture still lives in iCloud. It will be downloaded when you open the picture on your device. Perhaps "optimized storage" was causing you to think the original resolution pictures wouldn't be available on iCloud?

Why cloud based? I use iCloud on all devices for my photos but if I wanted to keep unedited photos I would just use a couple of local USB or networked disks. I have home network backup for our Macs and I also back up all my work to two separate USB disks and take one of them with me when I'm away from home overnight.

There are lots of good software options for managing photo collections depending on your budget.

cool, thanks, can you recommend a couple?

if sending photos via air drop, is the same quality maintained?

It’s an MBP 2012, so I don’t think so.
My primary USB HD is a 1 Tb Toshiba with an actual spinning disk not an SSD. An SSD would be much faster but the cost goes up. I also have a 'no name' drive off eBay as my secondary. The main Mac backup is a networked 2 Tb Apple Timemachine. Apple don't make them any more.

A 1 Tb disk based USB drive from a brand name is no more than £50 (I'm in the UK). Make sure it ways it works with Mac though they all should.

There are several network attached storage devices. Some you buy the device and add disks of your choice and others come with disks. Lots of reviews out there.

Having lost personal stuff in the past I don't trust to a single storage option so as well as my network backup and two USB disks I make a DVD from time to time. I'm over the top but now wanting anything to get lost.

Dang that sucks. What bugs does it have?

I'm an Office 365 subscriber... so I have 1TB of OneDrive included. And I'm using it on an iPhone and a Windows PC.

All my iPhone photos/video get uploaded to OneDrive and I can get them on my computer. No loss in quality.

Perhaps the OneDrive Mac client isn't very good. What problems do you have?

Many times over the past year I tried uploading photos from Apple Photos on my Mac to OneDrive and it was so slow and ineffective I abandoned it. Photos taken on a Samsung phone which had been copied to my Apple Photos library uploaded quite quickly to OneDrive but photos taken on an iPhone and Nikon were super slow or did not load at all. I brought this to the attention of OneDrive customer help and was informed OneDrive wasn't configured to work well with iPhone and/or Mac (I don't recall their exact words). In any case I find Google Photos and SmugMug to be much better.

Ah I see.

I'm using the OneDrive app to go from my iPhone to OneDrive... and then downloading them from OneDrive to my PC.

Yeah... it sounds like OneDrive + Mac isn't the best.

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

I find its Iphone to Onedrive, skips so many photos and often gets jammed. Plus it looks to me as it loses a little bit of mb but that could be metadata
