Best Color For My Website?

Hey guys - recently launched my new network: Sivatar.

http://www.sivatar.com

Color coordination and colors in general is a weakness of mine. I have to ask my girlfriend if my clothes match before I head out the door :)

I would love you opinions on the header color of my site. Too strong? What would be a better color choice?

Personally I would go more neutral and maybe try a darker grey (of the same range as the bottom of the page). Theres going to be a lot of colour with the little pictures so in my view making the rest more subtle will make it stand out more than a bright colour.

I like your thoughts there, but I'd almost say go a shade darker with the gray on the top bar. Not too dark, but just a touch darker than the bottom bar. That's just my opinion though. With the bar at the bottom being much bigger, I think it would help visually balance it a bit better that way.
 
am i the only one who finds it funny that your name is MacDonald, and you used red and yellow on his site? sorry, but that is a tragedy in my eyes. Kill the yellow, and use something more neutral. Cool idea for a site though.

I'm a bit unclear about the sivatar thing. Is the idea that people are attracted by the attractiveness of the icons and also the randomness of landing on something new but with the inbuilt knowledge that they won't end up on some dodgy virus ridden site?

I'm put together a website myself at the moment for a publishing company that I'm starting and I've become acutely aware of a few things:
(1) the amount of grey and all the muted colours on the web, which shows a lack of courage and design skill when it comes to color (no offense intended MacRumors); (2) the sheer number of menus and blocks of text on every site, making them confusing for first time visitors; (3) the desperate desire of even very large corporations to go 'curvy' and have rounded edges everywhere, sometimes with appalling results; (4) the equally desperate use of dropshadows.

My conclusion: we need to see a proper fusion of programming and design in order for the online world to be positively influenced by the 'offline' world of print and film, because there is a whole body of knowledge that is not being properly tapped or implemented.

You're way over my head :) I'm a Developer and we're horrible at design. In fact, that is a free template at Sivatar.

You have half of the equation of the site. It's basically a place to kill time, when search engine queries and bookmarks have run their course for the day. It's also a place for people to promote themselves or their brand (thinking MySpace and Bloggers here).

All Sivatars and websites are moderated before joining the network. So that addresses your virus issue.

BTW - You guys have some great feedback. I'm leaning towards a darker gray now because the Sivatars bring color to the site.

Try echoing the grey that's in the footer, and make the header buttons a slightly darker red than is currently used in the header. Then make the text inside the button the same grey as the new header.
