Would you rather have an iPhone and the Galaxy Nexus 7 tablet or an Android phone and an iPad, if you didn't want to be married to one ecosystem and wanted the best of Apple and Google worlds?

Neither.

iPhone 4S + iPad3.

If iOS is not an option, MSFT Surface + Nokia Windows Phone 8

If you want access to both ecosystems, I'd go android phone + iPad. The iPad brings a pretty good experience for users, and there are plenty of apps that are tailored to the iPad. Android tablets are decent, but there is not a lot of 3rd party support for Android tablets.

If I were you, I'd buy into just one system. With that you'll get data syncing between the 2 devices (plus other benefits of being in the same ecosystem).

People are choosing the Microsoft Surface without ever having had a chance to try it? Yes, the logic is strong with those choices...

I like using an iPhone + Android tablet. I also have an Android phone and ipad2 but rarely use them.

I living my new Nexus with jelly bean, but I am very close to getting an iPad 3. I think iOS just wins hands down in the tablet world.

Easily Android phone and iPad tablet.

I'm not convinced Android is viable on the tablet.

For my smartphone that I carry with me and do everything important with (Mail, Text, Calls), I demand more from it so Android is the clear choice.

My tablet experience is more casual. Games, browsing, media, so I don't need it to do everything.

Galaxy Nexus or Samsung Galaxy S III with the new iPad.

Android tablet experience is lacking and the 7" form factor isn't differentiated from a phone UI significantly to matter.

I agree 100%. My tablet use is mainly gaming and iOS is far superior in that category.

android phone + ipad is your best bet. I've never had an android tablet I actually liked in comparison to the iPad. There are plenty of android phones that are as good as (some even better since the iPhone hasn't had its update yet) the iPhone. Good luck!

Galaxy Nexus and iPad should suffice.

If you get into Android at all you can always invest the little in the 8GB Nexus 7 in future.

I have an iphone 4 and an android tablet. Love it, and am debating on switching to android phone and ipad.

But the more I think about it, maybe I should stick with the iphone/droid tablet. I love messing with the android but wouldnt want to mess with my personal phone, its like having a PC for work or a dedicated workstation. You dont want any junk or even internet on your work pc, you rely on it too much to mess around. I think if I got an Android phone, I might mess something up.

I do think Android 4.1 blows away iOS 6 easily.

I agree. I understand someone would be tempted by all those high powered droids for a phone, but really, no pad even comes close to the iPad 3.

That's debatable depending on your uses. I preferred an android tablet up until the new iPad for various reasons (better screen, more storage, LTE, USB hosting, better cameras, has a flash for camera, stereo speakers albeit on the back, etc). I'm am debating selling my iPad 2 for a new iPad but I'm going to wait a bit longer. I wish the nexus 7 had cell support.

I do too, but at THAT PRICE I am not too torn about it. This thing is cheap enough to put a tablet into virtually everyone's hands, and I think that is Google's ultimate goal; get more people picking up Android tablets thus upping market share and making development on the platform more profitable.

Best combination for me: Nexus 5 & iPad Air

Reasons:
- Fastest SoC in their class
- Nice build quality
- Big and beautiful Display
- Fast Updates
- iOS has still more exclusive and higher quality tablet apps (Infinity Blade 3, Walking Dead,...)

Strong bump.. But same for me, if the iPad Air was cheaper. :p

I think the best is iPhone and small highly portable android tablet aka nexus 7.

Reason is the large android phones are a bad compromise between a tablet and a smartphone IMO, as I would rather take a highly ergonomic and easy to handle smartphone for efficient day to day tasks. For quick consumption needs, a nexus 7 is not only highly portable, but also provides more screen area for better experience.
