USB C direct is best. There are even monitors that act as docking stations and provide charging to TB3 Macs.
For me, HDMI because with the external monitor that I'm using (24" 4k LG 24UD58B) Display Port has been nothing but trouble.
I use HDMI and get 4K 60 FPS.I would go with USB C to DisplayPort as it will give you 4k 60 FPS. I’ve tried to use high bandwidth HDMI cables that supposedly supported 4k 60 FPS but could never get it to work.

I believe you. I know it's possible. Can only speak for myself and say I tried several HDMI cables from Amazon that were supposedly spec'd for 4k @ 60 FPS, and they never worked. Only achieved that when I tried DisplayPort. YMMV.I use HDMI and get 4K 60 FPS.
Yes, I use a 2m HDMI cable to drive my 32” Dell U3219Q from my M1 mini (16GB/1TB). No problem at all with 4K@60Hz. Also scaled resolutions (eg “looks like 2560x1440” retina) run very smoothly.Anyone was able to get 4K 60 FPS using HDMI-HDMI cable ?
