If you have to choose between
1) USBC to DisplayPort; or
2) HDMI to HDMI

Which would you choose? Why one would be better than the other ?

USB C direct is best. There are even monitors that act as docking stations and provide charging to TB3 Macs.

For me, HDMI because with the external monitor that I'm using (24" 4k LG 24UD58B) Display Port has been nothing but trouble.

The 4k monitor already exists. Unfortunately won’t buy a new one for another year at least.

I use HDMI and get 4K 60 FPS.
I believe you. I know it's possible. Can only speak for myself and say I tried several HDMI cables from Amazon that were supposedly spec'd for 4k @ 60 FPS, and they never worked. Only achieved that when I tried DisplayPort. YMMV.

Anyone was able to get 4K 60 FPS using HDMI-HDMI cable ?
Yes, I use a 2m HDMI cable to drive my 32” Dell U3219Q from my M1 mini (16GB/1TB). No problem at all with 4K@60Hz. Also scaled resolutions (eg “looks like 2560x1440” retina) run very smoothly.

I have seen reports of M1 macs failing to wake external displays when connected via USB-C. I have not tested that myself. HDMI was an obvious choice for me because I already have a 13” MBP connected to the same display via USB-C from an eGPU and a windows laptop connected via mDP -> DP. HDMI was the only port still available on the Dell monitor.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I will try a premium HDMI cable when my M1 Mini arrives in two weeks. If it fails (wake up or 60hz) I will try to purchase a quality USBC to DP cable
