Hello,

Thinking about upgrading the GPU on my 2.66 Quad. I know about the flashing to 5.1 to get access to other CPUs.

Is the w3680 still king?

Thanks

Loa

W3690 is "the king" but the difference between W3670, W3680 and W3690 is fairly small, given that the only difference is the clock speed. W3670 might be the best in terms of price so I would look into that, unless W3680 and W3690 aren't much more expensive.

Hello,

Thanks.

Can we expect faster processors than those in the future, or has Intel moved on to CPU that won't fit a 2009MP?

There have been a few engineering samples of i7-995X (3.6GHz 6-core) floating around but so far there is no concrete info about it. That was back in April so it's always possible that Intel has abandoned those plans and is now concentrating on LGA 2011 and X79. I wouldn't wait for one since the performance gain is minimal and it will take time before you will find them for cheap on eBay.

Technically that is not correct since the two latter ones (W3680 & W3690 ) can utilize faster RAM.

You got me there. Still I don't think it's worth it, especially when considering that OP most likely has 1066MHz DDR3 already (W3520 doesn't support any faster).

Best value at the moment is either the

W3565 @ $300 with 4x3.2 or

W3680 @ $600 with 6x3.33

The latter supports 1333mHz RAM, was recently reduced from $1000 and is were I will spend my money.

my long install thread has title change to reflect that the w3680 is a better deal then the w3670 in the usa. www.buy.com sells both cpus for jsut about the same price on ebay.

real seller 1500000 ebay feedbacks and their own website
real warranty 3 years
real return policy 45 days no questions

as for the ram ;
the 1066 has faster latency
the 1333 has faster clock speed.

i would put the w3680 in your machine and keep the 1066 . you will increase your machine to close to 16000 geekbench 64 bit. this is the best bang for the buck deal you can get . if you sell off the 2.66 the upgrade is under 450

Hi all sorry if I have this wrong, but are you saying you can now fit a 6 core CPU in a 2009 mac pro ? Could some point in the direction of how to do this ?

Thanks guys
