I am in the process of converting all my DVDs to a digital format. I am using Handbrake and have done about 12 movies so far. I decided to stop and get some advice before moving on.

Right now I have .mp4 and .m4v (which I assume is merely for chapters) but will these formats look good on Apple TV and will they work on the iPad and ipod touch as well? What is the best format to use and what settings are recommended…

There is a appleTV preset in HB, i have used it for about 100 of my DVD's so far and they look great.

Like the two above posters have indicated, if you wish to make the movie strictly for the AppleTV, then use Handbrake's AppleTV preset. I've used it on hundreds of movies and the quality is great.

The "Universal" preset is good for giving you a movie that will play on everything. Obviously, not as good quality as the ATV preset, but still quite good.

No need to mess with any other settings. Those presets have them baked right in. :D

Right, but if he wants to use them on other iDevices (besides the :apple:TV) he should use the "Apple Universal" preset. ;)

That depends. If OP's other iDevices are iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch gen 4 then I would use the high profile which works with any device running an A4

For the new apple tv. The best setting is high profile.

Download the latest nightly built. Pick High Profile.

Set RF to 18 and turn off filters.

Its great for the new apple tv, iphone, iPod touch, etc

so...the high profile setting on HB is the best to use if wanting to watch on iPad, iMac, ATV, etc... and the quality is still excellent?

That's (basically) what I use. High quality and smaller file size than what'd you find with the Universal or AppleTV presets (at the same RF).

I just ripped a couple of movies with this setting - works great on my iphone 4 but won't play on the old apple tv or in itunes on my macbook pro (will play in VLC though).
Is this right?

The regular old Apple TV preset works on all the iOS devices that use the A4 processor. The high profile preset does too except it provides even better quality. You won't notice it on iPhones and iPads though.

So just to make sure -

If I want my converted video to play on my ATV2, my iPad, my iPhone4 and also my Mac mini, I should use the Universal preset with RF set to 19.5. Is that basically correct? Previously I had just been using the iPad preset. Will these videos work with my ATV2 (when my wife gives it to me for Christmas)?
