A fellow from another forum I lurk on posed this question that I don't know the answer to. I personally don't rip DVD's to Apple TV format (I'm waiting for the player that can get .vob files to my TV via the Windows Media Center interface), but I know a lot of you do this all the time, so I am hoping you might be able to steer him in the right direction.
I was hoping you might be able to help me find out the best workflow to convert dvd's to a format that works on AppleTV. I was having pretty good results with the following:
1) use DVD43 to decrypt DVD on the fly
2) handbrake to create the AppleTV/iPod file
However - this hasn't worked for some time as it seems most current DVD's have protection that prevent this specific combination from working. I am now using the following workflow:
1) DVD Decrypter - use this app to put the DVD on my hard drive w/o encryption
2) DVD2one - I then use this app to remove any 0 cells that cause handbrake to fail, and save the video as a new file (now have 2 copies)
3) handbrake - use handbrake in AppleTV mode to create the AppleTV/iPod file (using the DVD2one output file) with little to no modification of the default AppleTV settings.
The problem - I seem to only be getting about 20 FPS which looks choppy on the AppleTV. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a better way to do this? As I'm sure you're aware - it takes a long time to convert a single DVD, so I'd hate to go through this with lots of DVD's only to have to do it over later because of the bad quality of the original files. Thanks in advance for your help!
