Which DVD ripper/converter program is the best for putting movies into the correct format so they can be put on your ipad?

FWIW, handbrake is really streamlined, free, and new updates come out regularly. The presets are all you really need to know how to use (use appletv for dvd for ipad). You can learn the other things, but the quality of output is pretty damn good given the size and did I mention it was free?!

I had heard good things about handbrake too. I downloaded it and tried to use it to convert my DVD of "Star Trek" to mp4 format. It did, and the video and audio were great, but all the chapters were out of order and it skipped around different parts of the movie. Was that a fluke, or is there copy protection in place on some of the newer DVDs?

That's very weird. I've had no problems with ripping my DVDs.

Again, I agree with everyone else- you can't go wrong with Handbrake.

EDIT: Gorrammit. I always spell "Handbrake" as "Handbreak". Dyslexic or something? >X(

Interesting. Maybe I'll give it another go. Do you usually just use the default settings?

bluray?

What about Bluray??? I have a very large collection of bluray.

Dont need the know how for decrypt thats easy.

I havnt taken much time to check the vid specs on itunes stuff till I got this nice big ipad screen so is new project for me to start.

IS it worth my time to convert bluray to ipad or just stick to normal DVD rips?

What you'll need to do in the case of 'Star Trek' is: insert the disc, open up Handbrake, press cancel when the source window pops up, go to File, then Open Source-Title Specific, select the Star Trek dvd, and then when it asks for specific title type: 21.

I've had this issue with a few newer movies, so all you need to do is open the movie in an alternate dvd player before you do Handbrake and find out while playing the movie which 'Title' it is playing on and follow the sequence listed above. Best of Luck, great film by the way:)

It happens with UP too

I have had 3 or 4 movies that ended up with out of sequence chapters with Handbrake as well. I like the program but whatever you do, don't ask any of the programmers for help - some of the rudest, most obnoxious people I have ever seen on the net. But, since it's free, I guess nobody can really complain much about them.

I use Air Video :) no more ripping, stream instantly.

+1

Call me lazy but I was starting to get tired in having to re-rip all my 1080p MKVs into MP4's so my iPad could play it. Then I found Air Video & all that re-ripping disappeared. There is no lag while playing but there is lag when you fast forward a movie which is understandable.

Porn? Way better watching experience IMHO. :D

To top it off, I heard in the next revision they will allow you to stream your music.

For blu-ray you can use MakeMKV for OS X (and Windows I believe) or you can use Any DVD HD for Windows also. I've used both but I prefer MakeMKV in OS X. It takes about 45 min to take a blu-ray and convert (or re-wrap) the file into an MKV in 1080p. Works like a charm.

I'm trying out pavtube for blu-Ray to iPad encoding. Has a 720p iPad profile. Works for windows and Mac. Seems to only use 2 cores so I get about 30fps when encoding on my corei7 920. Costs $50 though :p. Open to ideas for an alternative for blu-Ray non mkv though.

Does Air Video work with 3G?

i travel alot, and would need the streaming video on the road

Yes, Air Video streams over 3G. Works great on both my iPad on Wi-Fi as well as my iPhone over 3G.

I use Air Video as well, but still use Handbrake to encode everything. This way, I can watch my entire library on my Apple TV at home (without Hacking) and have files I can stream via Air Video without any need for on the fly conversion. It just works.
