Wanting an app to play video on an iPad mini using the Apple TV lightning HDMI lead.

I have loads of iTunes movies but found they don’t play via lead as “no protection” error message. Netflix plays fine, Prime just shows splash screen.

So I have some movies that I can copy direct to the iPad, I have FE explorer, but which app can play via the HDMI lead? There seems to be a bug in the player on FE explorer, as when I tap on it the movies go in a small window on the TV.

Thanks

Another vote for VLC...

It might be worthy spending on an old Apple TV just to bypass the "no protection" error, since you'll be using airplay to the appleTV. (emphasis on the "might")

I have Apple TV and they work fine, this is for when away, don’t want to pack an Apple TV as well

Thanks

I use VLC on all of my devices. It simply works for any video format I throw at it.

HDMI specifically though? I was disappointed as bought loads of iTunes movies, and had this error, it was one of the reasons I started to get them from Apple for when at home on Apple TV, and then away using HDMI.

Thanks

I got VLC, however I downloaded the movies using FileExplorer app. I can’t see the movies in VLC.

Do you have to download the movies in the specific app you’re going to use? Can’t share access?

I've downloaded many movies just via my browser (legit downloads, not pirated), and they have all played fine in VLC. I don't know anything about "FileExplorer" - in fact, I've never even heard of it - so I'm not sure what role that may play in the situation you are describing.

Sorry it’s just an explorer app for files and NAS and cloud etc
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/fe-file-explorer-pro/id499470113.

It’s what I use for file management mostly as the Files iOS app is a little clunky still.

What I meant was I copied some movies using file explorer and they are now “locked” into that app. It would mean I have to copy again, or iTunes share or something to VLC.

However I’ve found a “stream to...” in file explorer, as VLC was installed allowed me to chose that, and worked with HDMI out fine.

*edit* found in iOS files app once they are downloaded they can also be opened in VLC

Thanks

Well was messing more, copied a file using file explorer.

I clicked on the wrong movie file, it was a iTunes paid one, and lo and behold it played fine!?!?

This was on the same TV, same cable, same iPad that none would before. Tried them all on the iPad and all worked, no HCCP error or whatever...?
