So my mum has tonnes on photos on her PC. Turns out she's not got any form of backup...

What would you guys say is the best way for her to do this? I would say she's got about 50-100GB of photos on there, not to mention countless documents and files that she really doesn't wanna lose!

Suggestions gratefully accepted!

OneDrive monthly 100GB plan. The OneDrive mobile app will also backup her photos automatically.

It's not a backup to store your photos in a cloud drive though. Store them locally on a SSD/HDD and backup them to the cloud drive or another backup solution.

OneDrive is built into Windows, surprised if it isn’t there already. Also Windows backup. Both automatic. The iCloud application for Windows is a resource hog and iffy.

Some form of local and cloud.

As a quick aside, as an expat Brit now living in the US for 20 years, can I say just how pleasant and delightful it is to see some good ol' British words in a post (mum, tonnes).

That's all, carry on... 😊

Ok thanks guys, first step has been taken, she’s ordered a 128gb flash drive, should arrive this week

Then will look into the cloud situation...

In the end, I changed my Microsoft 365 subscription to "Family", added my mum using her existing Yahoo email address, and boom, she now has the Office apps installed on her PC under her own account and 1TB of OneDrive space, which has automatically synced all her photos and documents to OneDrive. Great stuff.

We do now have the USB drive though I am not sure how much use it will be, it's only 2.0 and took an absolute age to copy a large folder from my Macbook Air, so I am not even sure it's worth bothering to try and copy a load of photo folders off her PC to it...!

Maybe you can make a system restore image on that USB drive. Depends what ports there are but I’d assume 3.0 or better, and is there a dock for expansion? Ethernet, USB 3.1, HDMI, SDXC...
