Apple Cinema Display is one of the best monitors on the market. It has enormous resolution (2560x1440) and uses IPS panel (the best panel type) and LED backlight. Those cheap 22" monitor in Walmart have TN panels and lower resolutions.

50" TV is only 1080p, 27" ACD has more pixels. TV isn't the best external monitor unless it will be used mainly for watching videos. If you're going to use it for something else, get a cheap-ish 1080p monitor from any shop if you don't want the 27" ACD

The best televisions are generally 1080P... which is about 1920X1080. At 50"... it would look horrible. If you are going to use a 1080P as a monitor... I would suggest something closer to a 20" to maybe 24" display.

The 27" ACD has close to double the pixels as a 1080P monitor (2560X1600 would be double. The ACD uses 2560X1440 because of the aspect ratio.

I'll be surprised if you will find anything much (if any) less expensive than the ACD in that quality class.
