I'm going to buy an external DVD drive for ripping as the one in my uMB in particular seems to struggle when using MTR. I've seen various people say that external is the way to go, but was wondering if there's any recommended models that people have used?

Thanks!

anything 7200rpm would be an improvement, but you're limited to the USB connection so any speed benefit would be negated.

Consider swapping in an internal 7200rpm (Seagates are fast) if you want a faster hard drive for ripping.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I'm not bothered about speed, but the drive in the uMB seems much worse than my Mac Pro for ripping certain discs, so I'm assuming the drive isn't rip-friendly for whatever reason. Hampered by firmware or something?

I've heard a 3rd party USB or Firewire drive is a much better bet for reliably ripping DVDs.

yes, they are. mbp superdrives have riplock and generally suck for ripping tbh. I use an external firewire enclosure with a Pioneer 110d or something in it. the enclosure and drive were like $60 U.S. and it rips faster imo. As well, I would rather put wear and tear on a cheaper yet more reliable external drive than wear out the more expensive internal superdrive. Just my .02

Thanks, that's confirmed what I thought and sums up my feelings too. Have just ordered a similar setup.

I have a Samsung SATA burner in a Vantec 5.25" USB2 enclosure. Works great and isn't handicapped like Apple's are.

I liked you old avatar better. Your new one doesn't look so...menacing. ;)
