I am wondering what kind of external DVD drive I can get and have it be compatible with the MacBook Pro 16inch (Big Sur OS). I have an LG Slim Portable DVD Writer. I would love to be able to watch some DVD's on my MacBook.😐

Thank you!

If price is not a concern, get the Apple USB SuperDrive. Otherwise, as gilby101 says, just about any brand of USB DVD drive should work with macOS.

Does that not work with your MBP? My expectation is that any USB DVD drive will work with macOS.
I want to try my LG one but I am a bit hesitant. I will test it out. I feel it might crash though. It is a 2018 one. I don't now if it will be compatible with my 2019 MacBook though.

I will try out my current DVD player (which I used with my MSI gaming laptop) with my macbook, although I am kinda hoping it won't cause any kind of crashing.

Your LG is pretty recent so there's a very good chance it will work without any problems. In fact, Apple hasn't updated the SuperDrive for a lot longer than three years.

Further, I use both my spouse's SuperDrive and my own LaCie CD/DVD burner from 2007 (that's right, 2007) with my iMac. I think that very little development is done on optical disc drive technology these days so incompatibility issues are rare.

Oh wow, 2007?! Holy crap! That is actually really awesome! I am definitely going to test my LG Slim DVD Portable Drive this summer and see how it works. I am also impressed that the SuperDrive hasn't been updated.

I have an LG drive which I used with my iMac. However, occasionally I have used the internal drive from my ancient 2011 MBP. The funny part is that 2011 MBP does a better job.

Alright, I'm going to see how my LG Slim Portable DVD player works with my 16in MBP. I just need to use an adapter for it to fit into the thunderbolt. The LG DVD player is actually really good. It worked well with my MSI laptop before Microsoft and Windows update rendered it somewhat useless. So I'm excited to see how the LG runs with my MacBook Pro! I've attached it here.

And there is something about those older gen macbooks that are more stable. Some of the newer ones don't perform as well as some of the older gens. But the 2018-2020 Gen seem to be a decent upgrade.
