Best external HDD for media server?

Was so excited to get my new Mac Mini and Drobo for expansive media service - until the Drobo started losing movie files within one week of purchase. I hoped it was a fluke, but within two more days, another file is missing.

Thus my search renews for an affordable, and hopefully nice looking, external hard drive solution. Taking any suggestions - preferably something on Amazon.com though b/c I have gift cards coming back off the Drobo.

how much storage space do you need? do you need redundancy? need fast transfter speed like fw800 or is usb2 fast enough?
