the airwaves are getting saturated and it is hard to find a free band to use. even then it is not great most of the time. this method is pretty much history.
I agree, the best thing to do is instead of spending money on a modulator, invest in a new Car radio with an Auxilary port and use it. There even radios now that come with USB ports that will allow you to plug your iPod into it and stroll the names of the songs you are listening to at the time.
The previous two posts are right! Heed their advice. I actually think the fm system is so dangerous that it should be banned, just like hands-on phones. You are constantly on the dial trying to find an open spot. Horrible. And the sound sucks as well.
Look at something like the Crutchfield site. There are many devices and even radios especially designed to work with iPods. Also, check into the TuneFlex.
You want to use the bottom port, not the headphone jack, with any installation. Finally, many auto companies offer factory parts to hook up iPods/phones.
I forgot: check out a local installer if you are confused. They probably have hooked up hundreds of people and know what works.

I've also found that it depends on where you live. When I'm on the east coast it seems like there's a lot more stations crammed on the same dial. Out in AZ where I live I still have a modulator in my Jeep that works pretty good. It is however one of the ones that plugs in between the antenna and the radio though. Sound quality is only okay, I'd recommend what others have said. I only still use one in my Jeep because it's open to the elements year round and not worth it to invest in a bitter stereo with an input.
