I know there's a bunch of threads about this, but which one is the best? I'm looking for the best fast-paced, gory :), best graphics, etc. Any ideas? Price doesn't matter, but I prefer free :D.

not exactly true FPS games but those are hard to come by now.
No they're not!

For Mac;
Prey
Doom 3
Quake 4
Modern Warfare
Bioshock

For PC;
Half Life 1, 2+episodes
Portal
Left4Dead 1 and 2 (very gory and very fast)
Counterstrike Source
STALKER
Crysis (this game, do get)
Fallout 3

For both, for free!
Quake Live

Serious Sam HD (on Steam). A very "traditional" FPS of which there are far too few these days, also the most frantic, and probably the most enemies coming at you at once of any FPS.

I have just tried four, Quake 4 and Postal 2 were the best. Are there any free roam games like Postal and possibly free?

Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 1, 2004 and 3, Call of Duty 4.

Well, COD isn't really fast paced, but its a very fun game non-the-less.

I'd throw Quake 4 and Modern Warfare as well as Counter Strike Source up as the best 3 FPS's so far.

I would say (I've played all below):
Call of Duty 4
Halo 1 (Best of them all)
Left 4 Dead 1/2 (Awesome!)
Battlefield 2

In no particular order.

quake 4 was really good. doom 3 was too repetitive for me. it took me months to beat just because it wasn't a game i could keep resuming. made me jump more than any other game i've ever played though.
dead space is third person, but absolutely fantastic. it was thoroughly incredible. i play COD4 all the time. there is a free FEAR multiplayer download, its pretty good. all teh half life games are just incredible. absolutely amazing. unreal 2004 is pretty awesome for chaotic battle. halo is decent on mac. ummm.... i think thats all i have. i would definitely recommend quake 4, dead space, and COD4. doom 3 is just good for scares.
