I need to stop using the standard camera app as I am thoroughly tired of it crashing all other apps whenever I've taken a photo so would like to try an alternative. Any recommendations?

The standard camera app is unlikely to be the cause, otherwise you would see a gazillion threads about the camera app crashing the phone here on MacRumors (or on the rest of the internet for that matter). I have never experienced the standard camera app crashing apps on my iPhones. Neither do all the people I know.

So your logic should be: find the cause why all your apps crash after using the camera.

Maybe you don't have enough memory or your storage is filled to the brim with photo's already? In that case try to free memory (uninstall apps) or free your storage space.
In the worst case scenario try to reset your phone to factory settings.

I doubt another camera app will solve your problem.

Fair enough, however there are tens of millions of iphones in circulation so who knows how many people share the same issue.

This has been my logic since early October when I first contacted Apple about it. 4.5 months, 2 replacement phones, 20-30 support calls, a couple of factory resets, 2 Apple store visits and 5 sets of activity logs sent to 'the engineers' later and I am still none the wiser. Feel free to suggest the next step.

XR is 128gb and I use about 70gb of it so very much doubt it is a storage issue.

Yep, tried this twice.

Really, believe me... The standard camera app does not usually crashes apps or phones. There must be something unique in your case. Maybe even on the hardware level with your phone. I still doubt another camera app will solve your issue.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Fair enough. Perhaps it is, but I'm on my 3rd XR now so would seem odd if the hardware is at fault.

I will bet you that your problem is in fact Photos app not the camera app.
If you’ve got a folder that has a problem like for example the date is wrong, or there are sometimes photos that are corrupted then Photos app can cause crashes.
Also if you have a jail broken iPhone it can cause problems with Photos app.

I don’t have a free Camera app for you I have never had the need for one but I would look at Photos app to see if there’s a problem there.

Interesting. How would I go about finding out if there is a problem with my photos app?

iphone isn’t jailbroken.

I have found some photos with strange dates, like 20 February 8889 - they have been imported from a computer. I cannot for the life of me find out how to change the date - any ideas?

That's WAY too far in the future for any of us to take advantage. If you had a picture from next year's Kentucky Derby or something…

You could try a app that edits EXIF data. I don't know of one in particular.
