I've been trying to find a replacement for Front Row, especially considering Lion will not have Front Row. I love the way I can browse files with Front Row.

What's the best replacement for Front Row?

considering Lion will not have Front Row

the only thing i've seen about this is it's not in the first developer version, there's a good chance it might be in, or a replacement added, like being built into an iTunes version that isn't out yet, but will be by the time lion comes out.

or Steve will be an ass, and make you purchase an :apple:TV.

if your media doesn't have DRM (most stuff from the iTunes store has DRM) look into Plex or XBMC.
if your media is purchased from iTunes, your pretty much stuck with an apple way to play it.

I already have an :apple: TV :) But for those times I want to watch stuff with the girlfriend in private in my room ( I share an apartment with a friend) I'd like to have that experience on my 27" iMac.

If you do not have drm content then you can use xbmc with the xtv skin.
This makes it a very close replacement in terms of features and gui.

Thanks for this. It may help me get over the fact that frontrow will be no more in lion!

My hope is that iTunes is completely rewritten for lion, and the fullscreen feature allows it to replicate frontrow with a remote.

I found plex a little over complicated when I tried it a year ago. I just love the simplicity of frontrow, but it's badly in need of an update.

In xmbc can you customise the categories & order your movies display in? E.g by genre. Or sorted by release date.

Yes... The normal parameters like Genre and such are built in. Rest can be done with filters. Start delving too much under the hood though and need to be fairly proficient with XML.

Transfer frontrow

As a user of front row, mirow, understudy and pyetv. I am hoping I will be able to copy the front row frameworks to lion, after all it ultimately is just an app. Or maybe, just maybe, steve has something fantastic in store for us.

frontrow replacement for Lion

Guys i just tried Plex, its a little slow for me
tried XBMC can't make the volume work for the apple remote (i use it with the iMac 2011).
Squire.. its still in beta so no music
Any suggestions

Straight from that website:
With the recent update to iTunes 10.4, Apple has changed how the library is read/written (iTunesAccess.framework?). As such, your iTunes Library content will not play in Front Row. I am hoping Apple rectifies this issue (as it also affected my Snow Leopard Machine). You can however access 'Photos' and 'Movies'. I will update the package if/when an update is made available.

Both Plex and XBMC are painfully slow if you have a reasonable amount of music (I have 16,500 tracks and both are essentially unusable).

iTunes in full-screen mode is a good match for music, but not for movies.
