Best GPS for DC area?

I know there are plenty of threads saying the pluses and minuses of the different GPS apps. I was just wondering if anybody has used any of these apps around the DC area? I know different apps really vary based on where you are. If I'm driving down an interstate, I would expect every GPS app to be able to handle that well, but how about city driving? Sometimes you have to make a lot of quick turns so any delay or loss of gps signal can really throw you off. I have a stand alone TomTom unit that is starting to get a little dated and I'm thinking about upgrading. Also, do you really have to mount it to your window for it to get a signal or does it work fine just sitting in your lap or in the passengers hands while driving?

I used thr navigon app through DC all last week and it worked phenomenally. It also displays all the exit signs etc and directs you to the right one.

I'd reccomend a window mount though.

Thanks. That is reassuring. Did you try it at all without being mounted though? I would mainly use it while mounted in my car, but it would be nice to pull it out occasionally when I'm in the passenger seat or back seat of a friends car and are quickly trying to find our way somewhere.

I've been using iGO My Way around town with good success as well. As mentioned, positioning is key - get a window or dash mount and let is get a good view of the sky. Do this and you'll likely be OK.

DC's better than most large cities in that the height restriction on buildings helps to block less of the GPS signal. The iPhone's GPS chip isn't too big though, so there will be occasions where you may lose signal for a few seconds within the city. The good news is it reacquires pretty quickly.
