I am thinking on getting a quad 2ghz Mac pro 1st gen for $500, what would be the best graphics card for it? I don't wanna mess around with flashing a card.. The 5770 and 5870 says it only works in the 2009 and 2010. Is this true? Anyway what's the best? Thanks.. I will be using it for gaming and video editing.

Fairly certain either of the 5xxx series offered by apple will work. if you search around, I'm sure there are a few threads about it on here.

yup as previous poster says, the 5770 and 5870 will both work

big step up from the 7300 GT

great machine for $500 - lots of cool upgrades you can perform on it

The 5770 is the best all-around value drop-in card for a 1,1.

The 5870 is also compatible, but it bottlenecks in a 1,1 due to the slower Rev 1 PCIe slot. Because of this, it's only slightly faster than a 5770 is in a 1,1 in MOST things. Barefeats has some info on this.

Alright that's great news. I can't wait to upgrade it from the 7300. I was thinking about getting a flashed 4890, but the 5770 is the same performance and has dx11.

The 5770 is definitely the way to go if you just want it to work. Just make sure you're running current Snow Leopard or Lion, and have a MDP to DVI if you need a second DVI monitor.
