best handbrake settings for cartoons

I have been converting films fine but when I convert DVD's of family guy sometimes the animation looks like it judders. Has anyone else noticed this or found a way to fix it? I use the appletv setting with the turbo first pass option ticked.

That sounds to me like the DVD is interlaced.

You should read this guide and check if your symptoms are what it descibes.

As well you can also try variable frame rate, which is set in the Picture Settings window if your on Mac.

Can someone please help out with this? Alot of you that view this thread know the answer but keep quiet?

Please help answer this question. HB takes way too long to keep encoding 4 different samples of the same cartoon just to find the right settings. And many of you have these cartoons knocked out in you're libraries. I have to redo most of mine because of this very same problem.

Then figure it out for yourself. People are trying to tell you things to try and if they don't work, its no ones fault here. Its not like your paying anyone here for support.

In all likelihood that source is both telecined as well as interlaced ... and variable framerate. Animated content can be the toughest to encode because of all of these factors. Unless someone has perfected encoding *that specific source * it will likely require some trial and error to see what works best for you.

Having said that, the latest dev snapshot of HandBrake which is available on the forums, has a filter in picture settings called "Decomb" which may/may not get rid of that "juddering". What it does is just deinterlace the interlaced parts of the source and leaves the progressive parts alone. That with VFR may do the job for you since vfr will detelecine the telecined parts of the source.

I will find out what the settings are. I have seriously nothing better to do with my time at this point. I know how to do these. It's just a pain in the ass, that's all.

I thought it through. I wrote down all the settings I am going to work with. Then I will encode one show from each cartoon series e.g. Futurama, Simpsons, Family Guy.

I will see which settings each one will need. I am sure that each cartoon series will have slightly different settings.

Then I will watch them all one by one to see if it's perfect. I will use Apple Tv and the iPhone for my testers. Then I will come back and post the best one for each.

Don't expect to hear from me anytime soon. When I figure it out, I will comeback with my results.

basically its telecined and mixed content framerate wise. Grab a dev snapshot which has better audio sync than 0.9.2 on some sources and use detelecine as well as vfr.

People always want someone else to do the testing. We get it all of the time. Dvd's and how they are mastered as well as how film is composited varies greatly, hence all of the different filters in HandBrake to address each situation.
