I recently purchased a Logitech C920. It worked well with Skype, Facetime and even iMovie—for about 2 months. Then it stopped working altogether. Are there any other options?

I have been curious about this as well. I have a Microsoft Lifecam VX-6000 and it works great in windows but only the internal mic works in OSX. Its a bit old so I was wondering about what is the best path for an upgrade.

I was thinking about just getting a used iSight webcam so I could free up a usb port and use a firewire port. Im sure it would work well with my 2nd windows OS as well.

The iSight is pretty poor quality though compared to something like the 1080p CS920, right?

I had the 920 for my Mac Pro but when the kids ever used photobooth the frame rate is like 10fps...terrible. But normal IChat is fine. Went back to the old iSight that works well for everything also the resolution stinks. Sad. I guess thunderbolt displays are the way to go now.

I found this Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro on eBay for an exceptional deal...$35. There were others for about the same price as well, but that was about three weeks ago.

You take your chances buying used, I know, but mine turned out to be amazing. I'm completely stoked, given they were originally about $250. I did a lot of research on them, and this model had many great reviews. I think they're discontinued now, but maybe you'll find one, or the latest version for a decent price.

Here's a link to Amazon for the same one.

I don't like Apple displays. I think the NEC displays are a much better deal, especially for photography applications that require a wide color gamut. I have a PA271 and PA241 side by side, and I'll never go back to ACDs now.

It's frustrating that the only way to get a Mac-compatible webcam is buying one of their over-priced and under-featured displays.

It has more to do with the lighting in the room.

Try increasing the lighting and the framerate should go up.

I've run the Logitech c920 for a couple years and I love it. 1080p , good price at Costco. You got a dud.

Side note: I use facetime a LOT with family. I run a 27" Cinema Display in a room that doesn't have a lot of light. I found a great way to increase the light on your face is to open a TextEdit screen and maximize it. Then run your facetime window on top of it. Really brightens up your face.

If any of you find one that does native auto echo cancellation, that would be awesome. The C920 does not.

Couple of years?

A C910 perhaps, but not a C920.

One of the problems here is that Logitech doesn't officially support the C920 under OS X. It should work with basic USB webcam support (UVC: ) Universal Video Class) built into OS X, but few, if any, of the advanced features are likely to work.

just outlines that the 910 and 615 has support. It has been a while since Logictech has done anything specific for the Mac and they don't seem to be in a hurry to do anything (given the basic UVC support is present). [http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Webcams/C920-software-for-MAC/td-p/784835 ]

If the 920 was working and now has stopped, it would be good to lockdown whether this was a change in the camera or in the OS X drivers. If can connect the 920 to a Windows box where have basic Windows UVC or Logictech drivers to see if camera works. If it works fine there then it is likely software problem. If it is broken there.... then the camera itself is the root cause problem.

There are 3rd party webcam software that some folks add to either control webcams or set up multiple webcam streams on OS X. Changes in those may be a root cause issue if the hardware checks out. If there is older Logitech software specific drivers (from previous Logitech webcams around) those too are likely candidates for the root cause. Switching to the basic core support might solve the problem. ( I don't think logitech's software is likley tracking modern changes to OS X. If no new software coming they can't be putting much effort into the old stuff. )

There are some work-arounds 920 audio in this thread also.

Thanks. I tried it on my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro, and it didn't work with either. I do have Parallels and Windows 7, so maybe I'll download the C920 drivers for Windows and see if that works.

I haven't installed any software that should affect the C920; the only thing I've done is upgraded the OS with each update.
