Best hybrids and phablets

Hey people,

I was just thinking that buying for myself a Macbook air and tablet would be a waste of money and i would rather go with something like Surface Pro 2.


What do you guys think what would be Surfaces best competitors ?


My typical usage would be lightweight hybrid which I would carry along with my working laptop to work. I need the tablet part when I am at home and want to just read in my bed etc. At work i want to do coding and stuff and i want to be able to connect it to external monitor.


I found myself that i don't need phone anymore. A friend of mine bought Note 3 but honestly i would not need it. And android totally lost in this field for me. I am still "happy" with my iphone 4s.

What about you ?

The surface Pro doesn't really have any competition, well I guess you can say the other companies that are making Haswell tablets. You can kind of fake the real OS thing with non windows tablets, but if you are using a proprietary coding program that only runs on windows then you need windows, or OSx if you decide to hackintosh a surface Pro.

The Surface Pro 2 has no tablet competition because the surface pro 2 runs desktop Windows 8.1. The surface pro 2 comes with a $899 price tag compared to other laptops. The Surface pro 2 is an amazing tablet, I do not own one, but after spending two hours in a Microsoft store, its amazing. The surface pro 2 while categorized as a tablet is a laptop replacement. While internally it may not have the CPU of a 2013 Macbook pro with Quad-core haswell i7, the i5 clocked at duel core 1.6 does the job. The surface pro 2 comes with Intel's 4000 GPU graphics. The surface pro 2 is the only tablet to offer 4GB or 8GB of RAM. Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 and Note III come with 3GB of RAM. The iPad Air comes with 1GB of RAM. If you want a powerful computer but don't want to spend a heap amount of money. $899 for a Surface Pro 2 and you won't regret. Plus the life expectancy of a tablet as powerful as the Surface Pro 2 will last you for years to come.

The surface 2 was released this past fall if memory serves me so, I'd say the 3 will not be released until the fall of 2014

You want to carry around a standard laptop and a surface pro 2?
I think of a surface pro 2 more as a laptop replacement device.

How about a Thinkpad Helix?

Do you really need full Windows on the tablet? If you just want a lightweight tablet for reading in bed, I truly believe that a small, light dedicated tablet is a great companion device for a good laptop and that integrating them is not the best solution for most people. My Surface Pro is an interesting device, but it's not much of a laptop replacement, and it's a pretty poor dedicated tablet.

Well i would need to carry 1 laptop anyway as it is my working laptop from a company with a custom windows bloated with ********.

Well 30% of my usage would be reading in bed or while on toilet and 70% doing personal stuff at work on it

I use a SP2 as my daily driver. Dock it at home with an external monitor. Surf the net on the couch and use it as an e-reader too Only drawback to me is the GPU is integrated but that's the norm anyway.

There are also rumors of the SP3 being announced first quarter of this year, with a higher resolution screen, i7 config, higher clock, and half a pound lighter.

I think i will wait for a SP3 or an iPad pro with OSX (hahaha)...But that what would be best for me...i mean a tablet is clearly for consumption of a content and the only thing i would do on tablet would be surfing, watching videos and 80% reading. Some of you might say that i can use an ereader for that but i hate e-readers and how it is blinking when you switch a page...and PDFs with graphs etc are too heavy for e-readers.


If there would be a device as SP2 with an OSX i would instantly buy it...but for me buying a macbook air for work and kindle fire hdx (yes kindle fire as iOS is just a piece of ****) seems overkill.

Have you considered an atom powered tablet like ASUS transformer book t100? May be more suitable for your needs than one with a full ultrabook class CPU.

Current gen of atom is supposedly much better than the last gen.

Really, a dedicated tablet like an ipad, Kindle Fire or Nexus is way better for that kind of use than one that is consolidated with Windows.
