What are the major differences in the three reversion? I'm getting a 20inch on ebay. I don't wanna get an older one if there is some crazy improvment that i don't know about aside from front row and stuff.

I'd say try to get the Rev. C G5. That was the first model to come with iSight, Front Row & Photobooth. And get the 20" screen if you can afford it!

I have that (with an extra 1 GB of RAM; 1.5 GB total) and I'm very happy with it.

If it's a Rev. B 20" one.
I know I'm just being cheeky because I'm thinking about selling mine. :p

Rev. B iMac G5s came standard w/ BT and AE and I believe 128MB of VRAM (whereas the Rev. As didn't come standard w/ BT and AE, right?).

Rev. C. iMac G5s are the ones w/ the built-in iSight; FrontRow, PhotoBooth.

I have a friend who got that model last year for Christmas. It's a nice and quiet machine. I want to get a 20" screen next time.

You are correct. They're a big leap over the original iMac G5's.

Whether it matters to you or not, wasn't the jump from the 2ghz G5 to the newer 2.1ghz G5 actually a good bit of performance boost? I remember seeing benchmarks that showed that it was a decent gain in performance.

ANALYSIS OF CPU CRUNCHING
As expected, the iMac G5/2.1 is slightly (7%) faster than the previous 2.0GHz model when it comes to tasks that are CPU intensive. The real fun begins when you run graphics intensive applications.

Aside from performance improvements, I understand that the fan runs more quietly and less frequently on the rev C iMacs (1.9 & 2.1 GHz) than the rev B's (which I have) which were themselves better than the rev A's.

I'll agree that the Rev. C's a much more quiet then the previous models. They rearranged the interior completely and moved the CPU duct and the fans. Still, getting inside the Rev. C is a nightmare.

You have to use a service providers access card (It's a plastic card tool.) Then you pop the front bezel off. Next you have to take the LCD off. Finally you have to deal with the EMI wrapping around the interior itself.

The 20" models in all revisions are much quieter then the 17" models since you have more internal volume to dissipate heat and sound. The Revision B. iMac G5 still stands out for me. It's painless to upgrade the RAM (cheaper then the Rev. C too due to the dual slots instead of a single one.), the optical drive can be upgraded, and finally you can upgrade the hard drive. All of that can be done within 3-9 screws.

Very true - I was just remined of that over the weekend. I had a Rev. A 17" which I passed along to my parents this past December. Then I upgraded myself to a Rev. C 20" - I visited my parents for Easter and couldn't help but notice how loud it was in comparison to my new one. My Mom thinks that iMac is the greatest machine ever, so I didn't see any reason to point out faults to her. Not that I think she'd care anyway.

I also felt cramped by the 17" screen. Man, that 20" screen is a beauty!

Yup!

Which models have only one ram slot. I want 2 gigs of ram cause I do a lot of video and image editing, I also want to run apature. I want the model that has 2 ram slots because it will be much cheaper to upgrade.

Only the Revision C (iSight) has one RAM slot. The first two Revisions has two slots.

17/20" iMac G5 Rev A/B Two PC3200 DDR DIMM CL=3 (2 GB Maximum)

The Rev. C has 512MB built-in and 1 RAM slot, so you could have 512MB, 1GB, 1.5GB or the expensive 2.5GB option.

Rev. As and Bs have 2 RAM slots, with a 2GB maximum.

EDIT: The Rev. C has faster RAM, which is a good point.

If you want to future proof it (as much as that is possible), simply get an intel iMac.

I'm a big fan of the Rev. B G5 (I own one, 20", 2GB RAM). The internals are so elegant, and I like how everything is readily accessible. Pricewise, I'd imagine the Rev B's are pretty cheap now, too.

It can be a $400-500 difference between the 20" Rev. B and the Intel one. If you want a big iMac but don't want t break the bank then the G5's still have some value. Plus you get support for non-Universal applications.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a logic board/CPU replacement upgrade from a third party for the Rev. A/B iMacs. (Similar to the 1.92 GHz iMac G4 upgrade) It'd be a nice custom job.

I would get the 20 inch iMac G5, and the most recent one before they discontinued it. You can't upgrade the screen on a iMac, so get the 20 incher. If the iMac G5 you get passes 1200-1300, don't even bother with it (unless it's REALLY REALLY REALLY maxed out). I have a 17 inch iMac G5 and wish I had more real estate to work with while I'm editing in FCP.

Yea Intels not really an option for me, since Adobes not releasing anything for 9 months, plus I wouln't be able to use the Pro apps eather. Id have to buy them or download them(eek) plus I would only be able to afford the 17. and I could then only afford 1.5 gb ram.

I have my sights set on a 20inch may 2005 g5 250gbdrive and 2 gigs of ram. One exactly like it just went off for 1100 bucks so I think I can get a good deal.

That's a very nice deal for that model. I have the 17" model and it's fast enough for me. I've taken it apart too using the service manual. It's so easy. Not that anyone at Apple could tell. ;)

I sometimes wish I did get the 20" model.

For your needs rev. B is the way to go. It has 2 RAM slots, large HD, a decent video card (even for some gaming) and is easily upgraded.

I would take rev. C just for the X600 XT :D But... I am not offered a choice, so I stick with my rev. B 17 inch :) Its a really nice machine, but sometimes I wish I had larger display (while working in Motion and FCP). A bit more RAM would also be nice ;)

Another vote for the Rev B here. I recently bought a 20" Rev B to replace my 17" Rev B. I could have bought the Rev C but decided that this way I could re-use the extra RAM I already had, plus the Rev B is VESA-mount compatible and I had already wall mounted the 17". The difference between the Rev B and Rev C in terms of CPU speed is negligible. OK so the graphics card is a little better and the RAM is DDR-2, but there is only one RAM slot so you're pretty much restricted to 1.5GB, since the price of a single 2GB module is ridiculous.

Just to clarify some other posts in case you haven't made the connection: the rev B iMac is the May 2005 edition. So you've already identified the "good" model, at least according to some. Rev C might be referred to as the Oct 2005 model.

May 3, 2005 — Apple releases "Rev. All models now feature 512 MB of RAM standard; the hard drive capacity is increased to 250 GB on the top model, with an option of 400 GB. Optional upgrades now include a double-layered 8x SuperDrive. All models now feature Airport Extreme wireless, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics chip with 128 MB of VRAM as standard. Also the 10/100 network interface has been upgraded to 10/100/1000. All models now ship with iLife '05 and Apple's new Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger”
