So after sleeping on it for couple of nights, I decided that I am going to buy a 4GB iPhone tomorrow and I was wondering which case you thought was the best?? I obviously am going to get a case because I need to protect a $600 investment.

i'm not a big fan of cases in general. my suggestion would be to get a pouch and a screen protector. but that's just me. there are also other threads you can browse about cases, like this one.

You really don't need to buy a case for the iPhone. I've been using mine without a case and I see no scratches at all, on the screen or the rest of the iPhone. I looked at iPhone cases on Apple's website but none of them that had more than 4 reviews were rated highly.
it might not have scratches now, but give it a few months. you'll see scratches, and that's even without dropping it. now if you drop it, you could get some pretty nasty scratching and a few dings as well. i've seen dropped iphones, and it isn't pretty. having a case could protect you against that. plus, you wouldn't want to break your screen from something that could have been avoided. even though people are saying wonderful things about its scratch-resistance, it isn't like the iphone is indestructible.
Most of the cases out there seem to be ugly, boring or add needless bulk to the iPhone. I second the idea of a pouch... it'd be nice to have some to put it in... especially for me at work without having to work about lint or wood particles (I work in a plywood mill) getting into the port or headphone jack. 
I don't see how it can get scratches when I put it in my empty pocket and it's scratch resistant nature. I can assure you that I'm not going to drop it, maybe I'll invest in a screen protector, but that's all I'd go protection wise.
It's a cellphone. You can bet your life that you will drop it more than once. It's not unlike TV remotes that you will fumble with and drop sooner or later. I myself am on my second case. I tried the InCase Leather Fitted Sleeve first but hated the fit. I will never use a hard case again like the Countour Showcase after seeing its harsh effects on my iPod. I will never use a film that is prone to bubbles, dust, and leave a sticky residue. So I happily ended up with the Griffin Elan Holster Case. I know I need to take it off to use the iPhone but right now it's the most elegant and Apple-worthy case I've come across.
I, too, would like to know what is best case/pouch wise. I second the notion that the phone should be dealt with case-free because I think that a cased phone takes away and adds bulk. I think screen protectors are incredibly lame no matter how much they prevent scratches because, seriously, wouldn't people ask you why you left the film on? However, I would like a case/pouch that is very thin and simply prevents contact scratches if it were to drop out of my pocket or be sitting on a surface I would rather it not be sitting on. I would despise a belt clip. So, any suggestions?

The inCase rubber one that has a long, complaint thread on MR. I have had no problems with it.
Belkin clear case. Also has a thread here with problems. Too bulky. Keeping it because I can see using its easel stand for plane trips.
Bought a Griffin leather sleeve yesterday and I love this case. Minimal bulk, protects whole unit, comes out easy when phone rings and belt clip is removable and very sturdy. Pic below.

Another vote for the Griffin Holster. It's fairly easy to get the phone out when a call comes in and it's unobtrusive otherwise.
I was drooling over those cases but I am anxious to read the reviews to see how they feel/function in everyday use. Pretty please review yours for us when it arrives?
I decided to use a case after all. I'm using the sleeve that came with my old 60GB iPod Video. Works pretty good, although it doesn't cover the entire iPhone, it covers all of the screen and most of the top of the iPhone.
I bought the Griffin case the night I bought the iPhone. The case is nice, but...
It has a belt clip that can be installed so that the iPhone is oriented either vertically or horizontally. At first I had it so that the iPhone dropped in from the top. The problem is the belt clip isn't that secure and sometimes when I bend over the iPhone is pushed upward and the clip slides off the belt. A week after having the iPhone it fell off onto a driveway. It fell on the top of the unit which is partially exposed. The chrome and back metal were both scratched and the plastic ring/silent switch is slightly worn down.
So I decided to rotate the clip so that the iPhone slides in from the side. This way there isn't going to be much pressure pushing the unit off the belt. Unfortunately, the iPhone isn't held in that tightly. Tonight I was on a leisurely walk and out pops the iPhone on to the sidewalk. Now I have scraped plastic on the corner by the speaker and a little more scratching on the chrome.
I think I'm going to have to find a better solution, or at the rate I'm going I'm going to need a new iPhone in a couple of months!
