Hi, all.

I have a 7 and am debating between waiting another 8-9 months until new models come out or potentially getting something now. I have recently started to have some weird battery issues and regret not getting that replaced for $29 by end-Dec.

Anyhow...my choice now is to either get an XR or XS....or wait 9 months. It seems like there are no bargains to be had on the XS, despite Apple's recent troubles, unless I'm overlooking something? What about the XR? Is the trade-in of $250 directly with Apple my best bet right now? Or are there any carrier deals (with terms of less than 24 months, ideally) that are all that good?

Thank you.

Right now doesn't really seem like a good time to buy if you're looking for carrier deals. Also, I don't know of any carrier deals that offer less than 24 months, and T-Mobile is even offering 36 months now.

What carrier are you on? Verizon offers a $250 prepaid mastercard if you BYOD if you're looking to switch to them: https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/

Battery replacement is $49 now if you want to keep your phone until the new ones come out..

I think smart phones have reached a point that like computers you can actually hold on to them for multiple years without upgrading. I just bought my daughter a iPhone 7 and for 29$ had a new battery put on it. It was a great upgrade from the 6 she had. I got a 8 at launch and can see myself keeping it at least another product cycle. Nothing about the Xs/Max/Xr interests me.

I own my iPhone 7 outright. It sounds like the $250 trade-in value from Apple is not reason enough to buy a phone right now?

580 dollars for an XR. You'll get a lot more screen real estate and since you came from 7, the screen detail will be the same. Much better battery life too... I wouldn't worry too much about that 5G nonsense. It's going to take a while and I bet the A12 will be in the refresh since TSMC is a ways away from 5nm.

I’d wait. Supposedly the next iteration of the XR will have 2 cameras. That’s a pretty big upgrade, imo.

Probably not but I guess to me, it wouldn’t really matter. Can probably sell it on Facebook Marketplace for $200 in September.

I dunno, getting a 1.4 screen size boost, much better battery life and a new Apple phone for under 600 dollars. That might not be achievable in late 2019.

Helped my mom pick out her first smartphone, a XR, last week. The only deal I could find that didn’t require adding a new line was at Target. With the phone upgrade on her existing Verizon line and device financing, Target gave her a $100 gift card to the store. If you’re switching carriers you’d qualify under the new line promotion I suppose.

Check weekly at Best Buy, Target, and Sams club for best deals on Att, Verizon, sprint, and US cellular. Costco generally runs inferior deals, but you will find T-Mobile shills constantly pushing them as it’s the only place they can get a deal since their carrier is cheap as **** and decided to stiff every national retailer there is to force you to their corp stores/dealers.

As a benchmark, recall during Black Friday the offers at US national retailers were generally offering $250 gift cards upon upgrade on parcipating carrier.

Unless your carrier is Japanese or Chinese, they likely haven’t gotten any extra rebates from Apple to try to get units moving. The Apple trade in program is paying out at about $100 over regular trade in values if that makes a difference

Sometimes Best Buy will offer absurdly high gift cards for trade in deals and swapping carriers.

Doesn’t this basically exist already? Called an iPhone XS or XS max lol

If buying used is an option Swappable usually has some of the best used prices on iPhones.
