Hey everyone. I'm looking for a BBM-type/SMS replacement application that I can use to message other iPhone users for free. I've searched around the forum and I see a bunch of threads announcing new applications and some peoples' favorite apps, but they are all either old or started by the developer of the app.

So, I was wondering if there was a consensus about what the best app is. Is there one that has overwhelming market share? Is there one I should stay away from for whatever reason?

I know of Ping!, Hello!, and WhatsApp, but I'm sure there are some I am missing.

Also, in the case of WhatsApp winning me over after this thread, is it true that I'd need to format ALL of my numbers in my address book as starting with +1 because it needs a country code?

This forum is dead it seems. Why the drop off in activity? This place used to be a thriving sub forum.

I don't think they're will be consensus on what the best app is there are just to many.

Why don't you try looking at the app store and see the most popular and check the reviews.

I have used Ping, Hello and WhatsApp, and I have to say WhatsApp is the most reliable of those 3. My girlfriend and I use this app to text each other, rather than use the native text app (and use up text msgs). Ping and Hello, I found, did not deliver all of the message that my girlfriend (or I) sent to the other party. It's well worth the .99 (I believe that is what it's still priced at) price tag.

Thanks. I think I'll go with whatsapp.

After all the wishing and waiting for a BBM type iPhone app, a zillion came out and it seems they have cancelled each other out. Too many different apps to keep track of that other friends are using...so we all stopped using them. Unfortunate. Crossing fingers for a standard Apple equivalent at some point in human history. In the meantime, texting it is. And Google Voice for international friends.

Textie is pretty awesome (by atebits). The update for Ping 2.0 looks nice too and when it goes live will work with their Blackberry beta as well, so you can Ping BB users.

Stop spamming threads with the same message. We all know you're affiliated with hello messenger, stop trying to pretend you aren't. No, I will not use your crappy app. I got whatsapp and all of my friends already have it.

I am friends with the Ping Chat 2 Developer and good things are coming soon, its already being beta tested for android and blackberry.

I think Pingchat 2 is far the best since they listen to feedback.
