Best Ipod Touch apps/ games for a newbie

I'm getting an ipod touch (32) for Chrissy this year (can't wait), anyway, in preperation of entering the next generation ipod market, I went to the itunes store to check out potential apps I would like. The problem is, there are tens of thousands of apps in the store, and I'm not one who likes wasting money, so I have a couple of questions:

1. What are the best games you would recommend (paid or free)?

2. What are the best apps out there (again, don't mind paying if it's good)?

3. Is it worth buying Quickoffice for ipod, seeing as it's only $12.99 (half price apparently), or should I wait for a better word processor to come out?

thanks for the suggestions, I've got a couple on my list now, unfortunately a few of those were iphone only, but that's ok, I figured I didnt really need a camera on the ipod touch, seeing as a stand alone camera provides better quality pics.

I just got my iPod Touch just over a month ago so I'm a newbie here too. Here are some apps I have downloaded so far that I really like:

Free: Skype, IMDb, Battery LED!, and the NASA app, which if you're a space buff like me you'll really love.

Paid: The CIA 2010 World Facts Book ($0.99).

I'm interested in the feedback you get on games because I still haven't got any yet. I was interested in getting BurgerTime because I loved the old arcade version but the reviews were not good.

If your into games you must buy NOVA. It's a new game just out this week from gameloft. It's like halo but it's on your iPhone/touch. It really is an amazing game. Also minigore keeps me entertained and doodle jump. I wasn't much of a gamer before the app store but now I love playing these games. !!!

I'd recommend Documents to Go over QuickOffice. I've used both and ended up sticking with DTG.

I'd also recommend Remember The Milk for task management - the app is free, but requires a $25/yr pro membership. If you don't want to pay this check out alternatives like 2do, or Todo.

Beejive IM is the best for instant messaging IMO.

And Mail Notifier is great for notification when I get a new gmail message.
