I have a invisishield case for my ipod touch 1g and it works really well. It doesn't protect it from being dropped, but it works amazing against getting scratched. The best part is that you can't even tell its on because its clear. I'll admit it was a little difficult to put on, but I've been really happy with it.

personally geta incase slider or if u want the slim profile of the touch to be maintained, get an airjacket case from power support for ur touch.
air jacket is 20-30 bucks., incase is 35

Case Mate Leather.

I would recommend the RebelTouch from SwitchEasy. Its a little difficult to put it on the iPod, but its a great case

I am looking to buy an ipod touch case.

As of now I am going to buy the #1 rated case here

http://www.ipodtouch-review.com/8.html

if anyone knows of a better case in the price range please let me know

that website is useless affiliate marketing. no helpful info as to why any of those products are "#1 rated" - no criteria or anything. search these forums or check the iPod lounge - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/accessories/
they also have affiliate marketing, but at least they offer detailed reviews of the cases.

Stay away from silicone. It will trap the dust inside the case and in addition will scratch the device. Trust me. Something like the incase slider would be good, it is also sleek.

seconding the Rebel Touch recommendation. It is a little awkward to apply but once it's on, it's on. It's also probably the #1 case when you factor in protection and looks. My favorite thing about it is that it protects the entire top side and the 4 impact corners.

as seen there's alot in the package for the 25 bucks:

looks daunting, but when applied, it looks awesome:

I have 2 other cases, the incase slider and some Belkin one, and this is the best one. I really like the incase for it's sleekness, but rebel touch just covers everything.
