Know what's great? My job. I work for an office that is slowly going through old equipment and surplusing it out. I just found a NIB Powerbook G3 with the plastic wrapping and the plastic on the screen. We've got like ten Powermac G4 towers, a 500mhz TiBook and about 8 G3 iBooks, half of them broken, and about 40 clamshell ibooks, half of those broken. It's Mac heaven. I'll try and get pictures of the G3 Powerbook.

EDIT: Photos added

Oh, I was probably mortified for about a week or two when I started. It's kinda like being in a warzone though, after a while you just stop feeling anymore.

every logical cell in me that tells me that macs are machines just like a PC, a toilet, or a washing machine, fails when i see a mac that is hurting...any mac is almost like a member of the family

and i am not a mac fanboy or zealot, either...i started the anti-zealot squad of northern california techies here on macrumors...he he

i guess steve w and steve j just got into my head with that smiling mac icon on older operating systems ;)

On the other hand, there are probably 3 dead and abused PC laptops to one apple laptop in our office. That's the upside. Most of the towers I pictured are in perfect working order, with the exception of running 10.2.1

There's a whole stack of 12inch iBooks that either have bad DC/ins or dead backlights that work long enough for you to see the boot up screen, then they die by time the OS loads.

The school that I go to, Illinois State University, has a bunch of unused Macs just collecting dust. They even have what I think is the first PowerMac (a huge, more square version of the eMac). When I inquired about purchasing one of the computers, they told me we're a state school, so all of the computers are owned by the state. Lame.

If they're still there at the end of my senior year, let's just say I'm going to be a few vintage Macs richer. ;)

Daniel.

the federal government does not use GAAP and financially depreciate used machines so that's one reason why your state probably, if they have a similar system to uncle sam, won't sell you their machine

if you or i had a business and had a depreciated machine broken or stolen, and claimed it was new and of full value, like uncle sam does with their computers, we would get fined...but uncle sugar does need a way to justify their allocations so they could tax us ;)
