My mom has taken a shine to the mac! I have been racking my brain trying to figure out which mac to get her, but I cant' think of one. Although, I am starting to lean toward getting her a iMac G4 or a Power Mac G4(Dual 1GHZ).

Programs she will be using:

iPhoto(heavily)
iMovie(heavily)
iCal(medium)
Microsoft Office:mac(medium: prabably word excel and entourage).

Help.

Why not a Mac mini (a core duo if you have the cash or maybe a closeout mac mini g4)? Put a nice 1GB RAM on it and you should be golden.

Whats your pricerange?

Why not the iMac 17''/20'', it seems the better computer fo rthe job. Can I just ask why a G4, when you've got the new Intel Macs, which are far more supreme?

Cheers

Do you have a budget in mind? Does she need/want portability. I think buying any PPC machine is a poor move going forward. Second, getting the latest version of the OS as well as the iLife suite is a great bonus. Portability asside, you can get a base Mac mini for $599 [add to that a $200 monitor of your choice and for about $200-300 more than a used machine you have a faster new one].

I really like the dual core machines. I can't recommend a G4 to anyone unless they are on a very constrained budget.

EDIT: I just noticed your nick is iMacIntel, how dare you recommend PPC :p

I am on a rather tight budget...looking for something under 500CAD.

One thing I could do is give my mom my iMac, And replace my iMac with a mac mini, giving my mom the power she needs.

Hmm, you could get a G4 Mac mini for under $500 or maybe an iMac G4 or an eMac. Speaking from experience, eMacs are great computers. The one I had was plenty fast enough and they don't take up a whole lot of space, even though they are CRT-based.

If you could spend more than $500, I'd say Mac mini Core Duo all the way.

Just get her a mac pro 3ghz man.

My sister uses a Mac Mini G4 with only 512 MB of ram to do iPhoto and iMovie stuff - the problem is the size of the hard drive, not the amount of ram.

Either way, the Mac Mini is probably fine for what your mom does - not sure if you can find an iMac G4 for under 500 CAD, tho...
