Okey doke,

I'm looking to make a MAME arcade stick (its my first time) that can accommodate 2 players. I currently use a wired 360 pad for MAMEing. Since its simple and the analouge stick is slightly broken on it anyway, i was going to use that as a donor for the project, until i realised that a two player arcade setup would probably require ... 24 - 28 inputs. (each requiring 6 / 8 buttons, 4 for the joystick, player start and "coin insert") so really, a pad is out of the question for both players. would a USB keyboard be up to the job, considering key blocking / ghosting and two players mashing all the buttons playing a beat em up? and would TWO pads conflict inputs with each other?

So my question is:

What input device would be best? Bear in mind im not a software wizz, but i can remember how to solder from my teen years, and i would like my input device to be easy to set up on both Mac and PC

any suggestions from passers by / people who have already done this?

PS I have grand visions of this arcade stick setup expanding to me building my own cabinet (at which point i would probably acquire an older 2.8 P4 PC from work to use as the hardware)
