i use smart converter on the app store, there is a pro version to make a que but if you do 1 at a time use the free version, converts most MKV to MP4 in about 30 seconds

Subler -> BY FAR the best one. But it's difficult to get used to.

Subler is by far the best. I use remux to remux an MKV's DTS track to an AC3 6-channel "Surround" track, since Subler has some issues when doing DTS conversions. But with Subler and remux, one can take an MKV with a DTS track to an M4V with 1) a stereo track, 2) a surround 6-channel remux of the original DTS track, 3) the passthru'd DTS track, and 4) Subtitle/chapter tracks if they were present in the MKV (subtitle tracks can also be found online in random places. Check the track lengths/release origin to make sure the srt subtitle track you find coninsides with the release you are converting.

Handbrake is nice if you are doing the Blu-ray ripping yourself, after you have used MakeMKV to get the parent MKV for Handbrake to use. But for just remuxing, Handbrake is a horrible waste of time and CPU. But it IS a tad bit more brainless to use, so a lot of people just use that to remux too.

Again, Subler doesn't have the best instructions, but if you have any questions someone smarter than you has done it before on here or on the Subler Google discussion page.

MP4Tools is by far the best: http://www.emmgunn.com/mp4tools/mp4toolshome.html

It's drop-dead simple to use (has presets for novices, like Handbrake), and the beta versions are dead reliable.

Sometimes MP4Tools does funky things with the audio tracks, though. Maybe that has been cleared up in the past year (haven't used it in a year). Subler is nice because of the metadata import. It's the only passthru remuxing program that has metadata support. iFlicks has metadata support too, but you can't truly passthru the DTS or add tracks.

Not trying to be argumentative, just giving the OP some options.

I have been using smart converter pro.

Works well, and is really fast with MKV files as most of them are able to just be renamed to mp4 with mayube the audio being remuxed.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I went to the subler site and it turns out theres a common problem with mountain lion, where you need to paste a codec into the library folder for the app to properly work again. Seems to be working again. I'm also gonna compare to some of the apps recommended here.

Yes, the audio sync issues when remuxing with MP4Tools have been fixed in recent months, but good point about the metadata import :)

Subler is by far the best. Don't even think of using anything else. While some other remuxers have better compliance with some rare MKV's, Subler

1, is free

2, handles even OCR

3, by far the fastest (I've very thoroughly benchmarked all remuxers)

Unfortunately, it's scarcely documented.

Yup, this is a problem with ML.

Just don't forget to use the beta (instead of the regular one) - it's much faster and more reliable, albeit less compatible with some MKV's out there.

It's a cool converter BUT

- doesn't support subs at all

- is about 50% slower than Subler.

Try MPEG Streamclip: it's probably the best converter, but I'm not sure if it does exactly what you want, though it's very likely.

Unfortunately, it can't remux - the preferable way to go in 99,9% of the MKV -> MP4 cases (unless the MKV has MPEG-2 (direct output of MakeMKV from a DVD rip) or VC-1 (some BD's video format; e.g., "300")).

Much as it has a "Save as", when saving an MKV to a MOV (it can't even write to MP4 in this case), the output file will be messed up.

All in all, it only should be used for true reencoding.

Well, let me disagree. The beta is a nice app (the regular version, on the other hand, sucks speed-, substrack handling- and reliability-wise) but still isn't as powerful or foolproof as Subler.

VideoDrive, which uses HandBrake under the hood for conversions, and Subler for remuxing. So it seems like the best of two worlds. Also, it adds metadata and artwork. I let it do it’s job in the background as soon as I download a new video, and they appear nicely in iTunes all by themselves. Not bad.
