best n00b friendly linux distro for servers.

hello all,
I need a lightweight Linux distro that can have 24/7 uptime, is very secure, runs on PPC (my B&W G3 that I'm using as a server), and is easy to confrigure LAMP (LinuxApacheMySQLPhp)on. I don't need a pretty GUI, as this will run headless. Most importantly, this needs really good networking.

and by the way, it needs to be able to run on a 300 Mhz G3 with 512 MB of RAM. and a built in VNC server would be teriffic. does anyone here use linux? should this be in another forum?
 
How big is your site and what sort of internet connection do you have? I am always a bit worried when I hear about people planning to host their site from home...

i have dsl and my site is under construction, but it's flash, so it'll probably be 20-45 MB. also, im currently downloading ubuntu server. it seems nice
 
That thing is that DSL typically has a rather slow upstream speed, which means that your visitors won't be able to load your site very fast. ie. say your upstream speed was 512k, then split that between four currently active users and you don't have very fast access speeds - especially considering that fact your site will no doubt be rather large in comparison with a site that doesn't make use of Flash. You may also want to check whether running a server on a home connection violates your ISP's terms of service.

I know people like the idea of running their own server, but buying hosting offers far better value and a better experience for your visitors (provided you don't go ultra budget). :)

i see your point, but i don't have a credit card, and i can't use paypal with my money because i don't have a checking account. if i had a way to pay for it, i'd be hosted.
 
thanks to all who reccomended Ubuntu server. i've got the .iso, and will install first thing tomorrow morning.
