Best NAS for Apple TV with ATV Flash on

Does any NAS drive allow streaming to an AppleTV with ATVFlash on (allows play of avi files)

does it have to be a particular spec? I have a PC at the moment which allows my AppleTV and PS3 (using PS3MS) to see a share on it. I basically want the same thing from a NAS drive

any suggestions on NAS? Basically need it to share folder to PS3 and AppleTV with ATV Flash installed

I haven't installed ATVflash yet, but I am using a HP Media Smart Server to stream to my AppleTV. It takes a bit of work to make it work. I had to install a Win2003 version of iTunes 8.1.2. IIRC, I then installed the latest version of iTunes. Once I got it working, I've had no issues. You just need to remember to leave iTunes running on the server. I'm hoping Apple will release a true home server to make the whole process easier.

A NAS (Network attached storage) is a server. Some are more expensive then others. I have an unRAID server set up in my basement that serves all of my content to a modded xbox running XBMC.

Was looking for a simple NAS really, not a complicated setup to just plug into my router to serve my PS3 and AppleTV.

Something like Buffalo Linkstation live, or WD My book world or similar. can get a 1Tb buffalo NAS for £120, but need to make sure it can serve my PS3 and AppleTV.
I want to keep all my movies, photos on there to serve, and use the rest for backup.

The problem with serving content to the PS3 is that it will not play some formats and may need to be transcoded on the fly. The is a thread here talking about PS3MediaServer that does just that... but you need a full computer to run it from my understanding.

Your correct on that. All my content will (or I will convert it) play on my PS3. Anything that doesnt I convert using Handbrake, Apple Universal which plays on AppleTV and PS3.

I want to get away from my PC with PS3MS on, so I can just run a NAS all the time switched on.

AppleTV with ATV Flash on plays the stuff that PS3 plays ie avi's etc so want to go that route

Ther problem with the PS3 is the only way to get off-drive content into it is via UPnP. For that you need a UPnP server such as PS3Mediaserver or Nullriver's Medialink.

For the ATV, I have a 1TB Newertech miniStack v3 hooked into an Airport Extreme via USB as a net disk, accessed with Nito and XBMC. Flawless. The miniStack also comes as a NAS, and although I have not tried it, should work also without needing the AE. Just hook into your router. Mind you, all is served over wired ethernet, not wireless. An external drive connected to a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme is an easy way to go. Very easy to upgrade or add a second drive if needed.

Confused. i thought the PS3 could connect to a NAS? sory only know a little on this. It states the Buffalo Linkstation is a DLNA compatible, and on the Sony site that the PS3 is DLNA compatible, so wont they work?

Looking at the Buffalo product, yes indeed, it has a built-in UPnP media server (DLNA-compatible) so the PS3 should connect to it; it also claims an iTunes server so ATV should stream, or use Nito to get it from the media server.

However, I have no experience with this product and couldn't tell you what media types it supports, whereas PS3MS serves almost anything you throw at it. Do your research or be prepared to convert all your files to PS3-compatible if it doesn't transcode for you.
