Im ready to buy a gps app im sick of reading the maps while im driving, plus its dangerous. How is the tom tom app? Do you NEED the windshield mount and all of that for it to work or can you just use the app on the phone? If thats not a good navi app which one would you recommend?
thanks

I'm using MotionX GPS Drive. It is very good, and only a couple of bucks.

Grabbed Navigon West when it was $15. It blows away NDrive (which, if it's back online—steer clear of). Haven't bought any of the other ones, but I don't plan on needing to.

I second that. I bought it for $0.99, and it works great (for the price). They also offer a free 30-day subscription to voice guidance (additional months are available as in-app purchase). It's on okay app. Certainly the best in it's price range.

I'm sure the more expensive navigation apps are much better, but you get what you pay for. Just depends on your needs and your budget.

Does Google Maps include voice directions?? looking for a free app that provides voice directions. not necessary, but useful.

getting the iphone already helps since i dont need to print out directions anymore :)

I bought Copilot for around $20 and it works great. Voice guidance and it announces street names.

If you really want voice and function, it might be worth it to pay for one of the better apps.

I highly recommend Navigon MobileNavigator in either the full or regional version. It blows away my old standalone Magellan and my parents' TomTom by wide margins.

I much prefer the way Navigon displays routes and highway signs and tells you which lane(s) to be in. And the live traffic add-on, which is an in-app purchase, is really helpful, especially living and driving in the traffic hell that is Southern California. It has full text-to-speech (meaning it tells you to turn on Main street, not just to turn in 100 feet.) That means you don't have to take your eyes off the road if there are short blocks.

As for window mounting, I have a Griffin WindowSeat, and it was great for my 3GS, but it doesn't fit the 4, so I've been keeping it in a cupholder in the center console, and the GPS can still read my location just fine. :)

I also like the little touches, like the fact that you can tell it whether to pause or fade the audio you're playing while it gives you directions. If I'm listening to music, I tend to have it fade down, but for podcasts, the automatic pause feature is great.
