A few years ago I went to a local used furniture warehouse to try out a variety of high-end chairs. Over the years there have been a variety of Seattle startups that have spent a ton of money on nice chairs for their fancy offices, then they go out of business six months or a year later. So there are a bunch of quality slightly-used chairs that can be had in Seattle.

At the warehouse I tried several high end chairs. One thing was clear... For my body, the HM Aeron is overrated (doubly so given its steep price).

Ultimately I bought a lightly used Steelcase Leap chair for less than half list price, and couldn't be happier. It's way more comfortable than what my company provides by default. :)

I have one last question for you all how do you protect your chair from cats ?

Not sure if you're anywhere near an Ikea, but if you are take a look at their Markus chair. I've had mine about 2 years and for the money, it really is hard to beat. I'd happily buy another tomorrow, although this one still looks like it has many years of life left in it.

I have this chair and it is practical and comfortable, and good price value.

I just got a Embody chair but can't seem to get comfortable in it :( My butt sometimes hurts in it. Is it me or the settings ? What am I doing wrong?

It does take some experimenting with all the settings to fine tune it to your likings.

I can't comment on your butt .... :po_O:D

Thanks I emailed Herman Miller to see what they would say.

BTW do you all have any recommended settings for the Embody chair ?

If you are over 6 foot tall:
Steelcase Leap is one of the taller back chairs. For me it's more supportive than the Aeron.
Steelcase Gesture is newer and has more features, but Leap fits me better.

I'll second the nomination of the Steelcase leap. Years ago, I had an ergo specialist order one for me at work sight unseen based upon her recommendation. It was awesome. I had it for 11 years before leaving the company. It was so good that when we needed new ones at home, I ordered two in leather. I'm sitting in one right now. :)

BTW, check if you have a discount through your employer if you are buying it yourself. I know I got a great discount from Steelcase that way.

I have not been able to try a Ikea Markus chair but just got a Aeron Remastered chair and so far like it much better than the Embody chair for my butt.

Well I returned the Aeron as well. It just didn't fit me right.

Back to the drawing board.

I have this chair, too. Really pleased with it, but it has one downside for tall people: the head-rest cushion can be a bit too low and can stick in your neck uncomfortably. I actually had to take the padding out, but it's fine now.

(I'm not exceptionally tall but there must be something wrong with my proportions - I also tend to bump into car roofs more often than most other people.)

I am curious why do you all think high quality chairs cost so much money? Is it because of their long warranty or more ?

When talking serious office chairs one have to mention the Wilkhahn Modus 275/7.

It comes at a price but your back and a** will thank you and it will last forever.

The other obvious choice are the Vitra chairs, especially the Headline which is ridiculously comfortable and ergonomic but kind of ugly. The other one is the Vitra ID Chair which is very comfortable, highly customizable and very beautiful.

Don't cheap out. Get yourself a Herman Miller Aeron chair. I have one at the office and at home. It's designed to conform to your particular shape and then bounce back every single time you sit in it and it never ever fails.

You spend a third of your life in an office chair, so make sure it's a place you want to be.

A couple months ago I went out for a good chair fully expecting to spend $$$ on a herman miller or Steelcase, and ended up with a "Sit on it" Novo task chair for $350. It's the best chair I can recall sitting in. Of course the jury is out as far as longevity, but given that the dealer who sold it to me has been in business locally for 57 years, I have hopes.

I use the wells leather armchair from pottery barn with an Ikea galant desk system that's been lowered to fit it. It's excellent!
