Hey all, I just wanted to know what you thought was the best office software for a macbook air or just a mac in general. I've been used to the whole Mac Office, but was wondering if Open Office is any good or any of the freeware office suites were good? I'm really not too keen on buying another office suite, but if one runs better than another, than sure why not. Post your opinions please!

Best Office Software for Mac

The thing is I want an office suite that is compatible with the Microsoft Office because most of everyone at my school has the Microsoft Office and I just want to make sure that I get one that has the compatability. I've looked at neooffice. Does this one work best for mac?

iWork '08, for the price is quite functional, IMHO.
Much cheaper than Microsoft Office.
I work with MS office on a PC all day long, but have come to enjoy iWork
when I get home.
I've been waiting for OpenOffice to be released natively with out the need for X11, once version v3 is released I'll be giving that a spin.

Again, I haven't problems with compatibility with MS Office documents. However, it may be necessary to correct the formatting. From my company I'm receiving templates and documents in MS Office format and has never been problems with them. But these documents aren't especially complicated. Personally, I'm quite happy with Neooffice.
Okay, I think I might try it out. After all, I can always get rid of it if I feel it's no good. It seems that compatability is not an issue. I just want to make sure that I can send documents and that people will be able to open them in Word, Excel, etc.
Definitely go with iWork. It's really cheap compared to Microsoft Office and handles all of the basics just as well if not better. I will say it takes some getting used to... I didn't like it at first because I was stuck in the Office frame of mind. You'll love it the more you use it and you shouldn't come across too many compatibility issues unless you're putting together complex documents.
i dont reccomend iwork at all if you have to share documents with office users. i have had so many headaches over compatibility issues that I got office 08. i love it
however imo, open office aqua is better than iwork in features, compatibility, and price as compared to iwork
I have iWork, Office 08 and NeoOffice. All 3 are great office programs. If you have to send and receive Office Docs, then get the MS Office 08. I think it is like $150 or so for the student and teacher edition or whatever it is called.
NeoOffice is actually really nice. You could download it and see if you like it. It is FREE and seems the developer works hard at keeping it up to date.
iWork is great. I use it a lot. But I don't have to co exist with MS Office users either. My wife is in college and uses MS Office 08 because that is what her campus requires them to use.

I can not open a word 97 file on pages (iwork 09)

Why fight compatibility issues? If you are a student you're talking about $130.
99% of the world use MS Word and Excel and about 95% use Powerpoint.
And, as a historical fact, it was MS Word and Excel that were the original killer apps on the original Mac back in the 1980's and have been evolving ever since.
Some things you should fight, this is not one of them.
