I am in the process of finally scanning all our family photos. I am talking photos of great-grand parents, old pictures of people, other family members don't even know anymore.

I'd like to post them online, where extended family members might be able to view them, then comment on them. The thing is it would be nice if the photos could be password protected so only family member can see them. Even better allow family members to comment on them and maybe have those comments actually attached to the photos if they are downloaded.

Some family members have an apple device some don't, but not sure apple's photo his my best bet, they would expire 30 days after I shared them anyway. Some have Facebook, some hate face book. I was hoping for another option.

Any suggestions on what would be my best bet to host these pictures on a semi-public site?

You can upload your pictures to Flickr and set them to family permissions. Then only registered users who you specify as family will be able to see them.

Failing that, Synology NAS boxes allow you to run a password protected photo server from your home if you don't trust cloud providers

For a free and easy site to use, you could consider sharing photos on Dropbox. It allows you to comment (and you can select just the area you want to comment on), as well letting folks download the photo if you want them to.

It's not just for photos though, so it's not set up like a really good photo viewing site, but it works okay.
