iPod Best options for looking for a new iPod Nano

Today, dear friends, I come to macRumors with some sad news. My beloved iPod Nano of many, many years (all the way back in 2009) was lost to the world on Saturday. It was sadly stolen and while I would love to assume it will find its way back to me, without the ability to look up my serial number to report it missing, I am afraid it is probably long gone.

I loved that silly little iPod Nano and the thought of replacing it with a new gen Nano is too heartbreaking. (because I loved the little click wheel it had) So, this means I need to find a reasonable way to locate and purchase a new (preferred new) 5th gen iPod Nano.

So, I come to the people I know have the tried and true ways for all things Apple to figure out my next best options. Color and size don't really matter (I never even got to fill up the 8gb Nano I had) but I am slightly partial to the blue, purple, gray and pink models.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. I'm just hoping to put this horrible weekend behind me and get back to my normal Nano usage here soon.

A few years back, I was in a similar situation; I lost, among other things, a blue 2nd gen nano via burglary. I had just purchased a blue 5th gen nano and had it with me at the time my house was broken into, so I wasn't totally without music, but I was still quite bummed. I too am partial to the Click Wheel for its no-look functionality.

Back then, it was easy for me to get a replacement 5th gen refurb. That's not going to help you now, unfortunately. There are a small number of sellers on eBay that have "new" 5th gens, but at a considerable markup (well over $200 for some). My guess is that those are for serious collectors. The 5th gen is arguably the most feature-rich of all the nanos so far, and much more likely to be kept by the owner or "handed down" to a family member rather than submitted for sale.

Unless you're willing to pay a pretty penny for one of these, you'll likely have to settle for gently used.

EDIT: Have you considered a 4th gen? They play videos like the 5th gen (albeit with no built-in speaker), and are a little easier to find online and in resale/pawn shops. I actually like the 4th gen's matte colors better than the glossy 5th gen TBH, but at the time I really wanted the video camera.

Yeah, I currently have a much older iPod (2nd gen) as a temp backup but I doubt the battery will hold up for all day listening. It's holding out until I find the next long-term iPod honestly.

From what I've found on eBay, most 5th gens are about $150 or so, (and all seem to be in different packaging from what I remember, so I'm trying to make sure I can find a legit one)

4th gen would be fine as well, I don't really care about the colors or the style. I was originally aiming for brand-new as I felt that would have the longest-lasting battery (as it wouldn't have been played or used) and would give me the best bang for my buck.

I've also been looking at used iPods around the area in stores as well but haven't had much luck yet. Thank you for the advice, I'll keep looking around and see what I can find.

Yeah, my biggest push on not doing a current gen is that I really prefer the click wheel (my job allows me to listen to music and click wheel > touch-screen if it's in a back pocket or the like) but I do appreciate the suggestion.

This story at least has a semi-good ending as I managed to track down a 5th gen used in pretty darned good condition and it seems to be holding the battery fairly well. So, while I can't say how long that'll last, I at least have a solution that'll work this summer.
