Lookup "VueScan". It has other features you need too like muti-pass scanning and scanner calibration using a test target. Easy to use also.

That's a question like "What's the best flavor of ice cream?" or "Who's the prettiest movie actress?" You have to define your terms.

Image Capture ships with every Mac. Your ability to scan documents, including photographs, depends on your scanner. Quite frankly, scanning photographs en masse is probably not a good idea. This is a task that may work for business documents that are of a uniform size. Photographs do not lend themselves very well to this task.
