Best place to buy RAM + some advice

What's the best place to buy RAM for my MacBook Pro. Apple's RAM is rediculously expensive. I'm nervous about getting non-Apple RAM though, because I've heard things about bad RAM, and all that stuff.

Also, I'm thinking of getting a 1 GB stick, which whould bring me up to around 1.5 GB. Whould that be enough? I cant really afford 2 1 GB sticks, but I will buy if I have to.
 
You can buy from Newegg or Datamem. You can also use the search function to find lots of topics that discuss this. Normally if the RAM is bad, the seller will let you return it.

1.5GB is a good amount.
 
Newegg, Datamem, I personally swear by OWC RAM. Avoid going for the cheapest of the cheap...A couple of extra bucks will be worth avoiding the hastle of returns, RMAing and customer service BS.:)

This is the route I went and it worked out great.
 
After seeing some of the prices, I think I'm going to go for 2 GB. How will this affect my Warrenty?

If you have to ship it back to Apple or get them to repair it make sure you have put the Apple RAM back into the machine (so don't sell it on eBay ;) ) otherwise it will be invalid under the warranty.

So, if I remove the 512MB chip that came with the MacBook Pro, then Apple won't care, even if it's not "official" RAM?

So, do I just store the old RAM in a plastic Ziplock bag in my desk drawer?

Is that an anti-static enclosure? I dunno, so I ask. Store it in something that will keep it dry, static free and away from things that could physically damage it...but you knew that already:)

That sounds like a perfect discription of a Ziplock bag if I ever heard one.
 
What? Leaving your aftermarket RAM in doesn't invalidate anything.

There is a chance that the 'Geniuses' (note scare-quotes) will just blame any given problem on the evils of aftermarket RAM, but you can get past that.

Leaving the non-Apple RAM in is frowned upon, hence Eraserhead's suggestion of removing it in the event of shipping it out for service:)
 
So all these threads would disappear if Apple would get with the program and be more realistic about their RAM prices.

I thought I read somewhere that Apple was commited to competively pricing their RAM by the end of the year. Any update on this?

I would love to buy my extra RAM from Apple and have it the computer when I get it, but I can't justify spending double what I can get it for else where.
 
Now that apple has switched to intel, doesn't that mean that the ram they use is the same stuff the Asian kids are making for the PC people? Apple better lower the ram prices. $500 plus for 2gb is just nuts.

They have used the same stuff PC's have been using for a long time, my iMac G5 uses standard PC ram for one thing.
