anyone know where i can get a good used machine? someone that doesn't rip you off??

i found 4 core - 2.66 GHZ INTEL XEON - 10.8 os , macpro 4,1
for $799. Is that a good price?

i got an 8-core 2.26 for that price a few months ago. i'd keep looking.

I'd also MAKE SURE it's a 4,1. not everyone is honest about these things.

I'm bout to place my 2.66 8 core 4.1 on eBay today. PM me if interested. I have pics and specs of upgrades included

I wouldn't normally suggest eBay, since you'd have to really trust the seller, but I got the 5,1 12-core in my signature on eBay a month or so ago and it worked out well. Over 2 years of AppleCare warranty left on it (which I verified before purchasing), with 512GB SSD and 24GB RAM, for $3,300.

I may sell my Quad 5,1 with 32MB RAM, Applecare thru June 2015. Of course can't sell till I get my nMP.

3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
1TB hd

I'd keep your 5,1 and upgrade the CPU to 6 core and forget about getting the trashcan MP.

Yes, the nMP is so terrible...

Really can't understand this attitude unless you have a massive investment in legacy hardware.

The challenge of course, with any of these is:

1) You are locking yourself into older connection standards (USB2, Firewire, SATA, etc), and you are getting older slower MB tech (especially the memory bus)
2) Most of these systems are stripped, so you would still need to buy memory, drives, and video cards.

While it is true that you can get a good system for a lot less, you are NOT getting the horsepower of the new systems. One of the older ones might be good enough, but, in most cases, you are buying a system that is already 3 years old.. and will only get older.
