Im looking to get a portable external hard drive for my 2.2 MBP... Any thoughts?

I own one of these:

2.5-Drive.jpg

160GB 2.5" drive, USB 2.0 connection. The drive gets all its power from USB too so you don't have to worry about carrying a power supply.

Costs £89.00 (~$160).

The most important part of an external is reliability.

We love G-Technology drives. No problems. 8 drives. 3TBs. Video Editing-writing over and over again.

Highly recommended.

I don't work for G-Tech.

Depends if you want USB to provide power, or what you're using the drive for. I'd go to dealmac.com and find a name brand on sale. If you're looking for extra storage on the go, I'd recommend trying to upgrade the drive in your MBP instead of hauling around an external.

Depends on how much space you need, but perhaps an old iPod from eBay? I have my old 1st Gen iPod as a back up boot drive, just in case.

Depends on the emphasis of portable by the user. Big difference between an external one and a portable one.

External drives require power from the mains, portable ones use power from USB/FW.

If the user isn't fussed about carrying a mains adapter then +1 on the MyBooks.

by portable i mean power from usb and easy to carry around... Also if you upgrade you hard drive in a mbp doesn't that void the warranty? I need a 160 gb... I guess i should rephrase the question i just wanted to see everyone's discussion, so i need a portable 160 gb external drive. What is the best drive for under 150?

I keep having these things die on me so I'm getting the most solid one I can find: The Lacie Rugged 160GB FW800 - encased in aluminium with rubber shock absorbers. If it's for you backup data, it's worth the 200 dollars.
