How can I convert my current .avi files to .m4v or an apple TV2 Compatible file format?

What is the best program to do that? Thanks in advance!

It really depends on the type of audio/video codec used in the AVI file.

But with most AVI files, just use Handbrake on the ATV settings and let it run.

If it's Xvid/Divx, you should be able to use MKVTools to mux the Xvid/Divx in to m4v and convert the mp3/ac3 to AAC.

That way the quality of the video is unaltered and you save a helluva lot of time :D

Handbrake

Handbrake does the job very nicely. Visualhub does it a little bit easier, but Handbrake quality is higher.

iVl from the Mac App Store. Best $3.99 I've ever spent. Tags, titles, and movies to iTunes automatically. Quality is great on everything I've encoded so far. I've encoded just about any format I've downloaded (avi, mkv, m2ts).

can ivi boost the sound from the video as Handbrake is having low volume after conversion?

I have been using iFlicks, fantastic program. It's got all of the presets for apple formats, it also adds the metadata and sends the finished file to itunes.
