Best RAID setup?!?

What is everyone using for raid storage these days? My 4tb external is about full and thinking of going with a 5 bay set up. I have looked at drobo, synology but don't need the NAS aspect. Any thoughts? Was looking heavily into the drobo 5d but seriously $800 with no drives?!?!

2 of these cost 730 run them as jbod you get 4 volumes each is 2tb for a total of 8tb.

as separate volumes only 1 of them dies if the setup fails.

if you link to the site with ebates 2% back. I own one of them I am pretty happy with it.

Also the volume is non- proprietary ie it reads as a standard mac drive if you reformat it that way. drobo and nas are proprietary . the drives are seagate 7200 rpm pretty quick as stand alone.

I have tried a few RAID 0 enclosures (esata through Lacie T-Bolt and USB3.0) but actually found two USB 3.0 4TB drives in RAID-0 using Apple Raid 2.0 (software RAID in Disk Utility) gave me the fastest RAID speeds over any enclosure. I get 270 plus Mb/s in Black Magic on read/write using two Segate 4TB (8TB array) Backup Plus drives (7200rpm). You need to make sure they are the 7200rpm drives though as Seagate now make 5900rpm drives instead for their 4TBs. It is a very cost effective method as you simply need the 7200rpm USB 3.0 external drives. You don't have to dismantle them for drives or destroy warranties etc. Just buy them, plug them in, run RAID in disk util and your up.

Yeah I currently have one of their drives as my back up. I have been considering just picking up another one. Thanks for the numbers! May just had to do that and raid them.

Note my speed tests on this thread. A little more detail here.

Also I was using a kanex hub then. I found using two ports directly on the mini (if you can sacrafice them) is a touch faster, although the kanex is very fast.

Just for interest, check out the speed of the single non-raid seagate 3tb. Incredible for a basic external backup drive. I pulled it apart to see what drive was inside and it was a standard 3tb seagate barracuda 7200rpm. This drive rivals the velociraptor 10000rpm drive and it is 3 times the size and probably three times cheaper.
