Best real world way to judge performance?

OK, so benchmark tests like geek bench give you an indication of system performance - but what are some real world ways to see how much faster a particular system is than another?

I have a Mac Pro 2.66, and wanted to compare to an older 2.3 dual G5 just for kicks. What would do it best? Photoshop or Final cut? Exactly what is the best and most consistent tests to do? Both feel fairly snappy in just regular browsing.

There is a simple answer: get a stopwatch and time how long it takes to do a series of tests on each system. Don't know about Final Cut Pro, but you can record a series of actions on PS, an then run them automatically. Run it on both systems and see.

It's the simplest way (if you have access to both computers) to test real performance.
